Chapter 9 - MY GRANDFATHER’S NAME WAS ON THE ORIGINAL PARTNERSHIP

Richard Brooks was not rich when he died.

At least not publicly.

He owned a hardware store.

Drove old Buick.

Lived in same bungalow thirty years.

But original partnership papers showed:

Richard Brooks — 25%.

Malcolm Voss — 50%.

Eleanor Voss — 25%.

Business:

Voss-Brooks Freight & Hospitality.

Forty years old.

Later reorganized.

Richard exited twenty-eight years earlier.

Payout:

$2 million.

Where did it go?

Not family.

Dad’s notes explained.

Richard discovered Malcolm using company for crimes.

Wanted out.

Took settlement.

Then donated most anonymously to community foundations and deaf-access programs.

That caught my attention.

Deaf access?

Why?

Richard had a deaf daughter.

My aunt Rose.

I never knew.

She died young before I was born.

That was why Dad already knew some sign language.

He learned from his sister.

Then taught Salvatore.

Then me later through Eli.

ASL was not random thread.

It ran through family.

My grandfather’s exit agreement included one strange clause:

If Voss organization violated non-retaliation against Brooks descendants, certain warehouse title interests reverted fully to Brooks heirs free of Voss easement.

Meaning Malcolm had no right to tunnel if he targeted us.

Eli’s hit-and-run and current threats could trigger property rights.

Lawyers got involved.

Warehouse legally ours anyway, but old easement controlling tunnel could be terminated.

That would destroy a valuable hidden route for Voss network.

Now motive for killing/discrediting us clearer.

If Hannah/Eli removed or declared culpable, Frederick trustee could preserve easement.

Then succession dinner.

Law enforcement wanted controlled operation.

Salvatore refused bringing me into danger.

I refused being spoken for.

We argued in sign.

Fast.

Eli watched.

Then signed:

YOU TWO FIGHT LIKE OLD MARRIED PEOPLE.

I glared.

Salvatore almost smiled.

Not romance yet.

Maybe connection.

Then I signed:

I AM NOT GOING TO DINNER AS BAIT.

Salvatore:

GOOD.

BUT I WILL HELP DECIDE WHAT HAPPENS WITH MY PROPERTY AND MY NAME.

He nodded.

Fair.

Authorities arranged legal strategy.

No vigilante.

No weapons.

Malcolm’s network targeted through financial warrants and internal affairs.

Vanessa cooperated for reduced exposure.

Brett too.

Frederick finally broke.

He admitted hiding trust.

Stealing rents.

Payroll fraud.

But claimed Adrian forced much.

No full innocence.

Colin arrested for corruption and obstruction.

Dr. Marks charged? Professional fraud investigation.

Adrian remained missing.

Malcolm unseen.

Then Vanessa gave location of succession dinner:

Private top floor of Lakeshore Hotel.

Police surveillance.

But Malcolm never appeared.

Video screen only.

Voice altered.

Everyone assembled:

Adrian finally appeared.

Frederick under cooperation wearing wire? Maybe.

Vanessa.

Two businessmen.

Salvatore did not attend physically; attorney representation? But invite demanded. He chose legal remote with police? Hmm for drama, maybe he attends under law enforcement monitoring, but we shouldn't instruct operational crime. Fine narrative.

I remained in nearby secure room with investigators.

Malcolm’s screen came on.

Older face.

Seventies.

Alive.

He looked ordinary.

That was terrifying.

He said:

“Salvatore.”

Salvatore read captions and signed response interpreted by Marco.

Malcolm:

“Your uncle betrayed me.”

Salvatore:

“He tried to leave.”

“Same thing.”

Then Malcolm addressed Adrian.

“You touched the Brooks family.”

Adrian stiffened.

Interesting.

Malcolm had not ordered Eli attack.

“You were told they were protected.”

Adrian said:

“Daniel broke terms.”

“No.”

Malcolm smiled.

“You did.”

Internal fracture.

Then he addressed Vanessa.

“You embarrassed your father.”

She said:

“My father stole from children.”

Frederick looked down.

Then Malcolm asked:

“Where is Hannah?”

Salvatore signed:

NOT HERE.

Malcolm looked almost amused.

“She signs like Rose.”

My aunt.

He had known her.

Then:

“Tell her grandfather stole something from me.”

What?

Not money.

A document.

Original Voss succession charter.

Richard took it when left.

Where?

Maybe second ledger box? Police hadn't found.

Malcolm needed.

Why?

Without charter, his successors disputed ownership among companies.

Adrian wanted it.

That was real succession fight.

Dad may have hidden.

Then Malcolm said:

“Richard gave it to Daniel.”

I remembered Dad toolbox second compartment maybe.

We found letters but not charter.

Aunt Linda?

She admitted one sealed envelope still unopened.

Dad instructed:

Give Hannah only after she turns thirty.

I was twenty-seven.

Why thirty?

Maybe legal trust maturity.

But crisis.

Attorney sought permission? It's family envelope, Linda can give.

Inside:

Original charter.

And a handwritten codicil.

Malcolm Voss’s signature.

If Malcolm dies or disappears beyond ten years, control of legitimate Voss-Brooks Holdings transfers partly to surviving Brooks line unless Richard waived.

He never waived.

Malcolm had been legally dead fifteen years.

If death declaration stood, Brooks heirs could own legitimate corporate assets.

That might be hundreds of millions.

No wonder Malcolm cared.

But if he now publicly proved alive, those rights vanish.

Yet proving alive exposes identity fraud and old criminal cases.

He was trapped.

The Brooks family held legal leverage simply by possessing original charter.

Then dinner screen abruptly went dark.

Fire alarm.

Chaos.

Adrian disappeared through service route before police containment.

No details.

Frederick arrested formally.

Vanessa protected.

Salvatore safe.

Malcolm vanished digitally again.

Then next morning, a courier delivered package to my apartment.

No sender.

Inside:

A black key.

Photograph of a safe-deposit box.

And note:

HANNAH,

YOUR GRANDFATHER DID NOT TAKE THE CHARTER TO PROTECT YOU.

HE TOOK IT BECAUSE HALF THE MONEY WAS HIS.

Signed:

M.V.

Then second line:

ASK SALVATORE WHAT HIS UNCLE DID WITH RICHARD BROOKS THE NIGHT ROSE DIED.

I looked at Salvatore.

His face changed.

He knew something.

“What?”

May you like

He signed:

I WAS HOPING THAT PART WASN’T TRUE.
