Chapter 10 - THE LAST SECRET WAS BURIED INSIDE A SILENT FAMILY

Rose Brooks.

My father’s older sister.

My grandfather’s daughter.

Deaf from birth.

The reason ASL entered our family decades before Eli.

She died at twenty-three.

Officially:

House fire.

I had never questioned.

Salvatore knew story from Dominic.

Dominic Marquetti was twenty-five then.

Worked transport with Voss-Brooks.

He and Rose were in love.

My grandfather hated it.

Not because Dominic heard and Rose didn’t.

Because Dominic worked for Malcolm.

Richard was trying to leave.

Rose wanted Dominic to leave too.

Then fire.

Dominic survived.

Rose did not.

My grandfather blamed him.

That may explain why Richard stole charter and exited.

But Salvatore signed:

DOMINIC SAID THE FIRE WAS SET.

By who?

He never knew.

Malcolm blamed rival.

Richard blamed Dominic.

Dominic blamed Malcolm.

Family shattered.

Then Dad, years later, helped Salvatore despite Marquetti name.

Why?

Because he learned Dominic tried to save Rose.

Maybe.

Dad’s ledger contained old newspaper clipping.

On back:

DOMINIC WENT BACK INSIDE TWICE.

He was burned badly.

Scar? Salvatore’s facial scar from separate accident? Could connect? No.

Then another note:

DAD WAS WRONG ABOUT HIM.

So Daniel reconciled history privately.

That was why he helped Salvatore after warehouse explosion.

Cycle of debt.

Then safe-deposit key.

We accessed with authorities/lawyer.

Inside:

Rose’s diary.

Letters between Rose and Dominic.

And ownership certificates.

Rose held ten percent in Voss-Brooks.

Her grandfather? Wait Richard gave her shares perhaps.

After death, should pass to heirs? She had none.

Could pass estate to father Richard.

Then eventually Daniel and Linda.

Then Hannah/Eli.

More ownership.

But money was less important.

Diary.

Rose wrote:

Malcolm is moving things through the restaurant accounts Richard doesn’t know.

Then:

Dominic wants to tell Richard, but Malcolm says if he leaves, everybody loses.

Then final entry two days before fire:

I saw Adrian’s father with Malcolm.

Adrian’s father?

Generational continuity.

Name:

Victor Vale.

Adrian inherited role.

Then:

They’re going to burn the storage room and blame Dominic.

My stomach dropped.

Rose predicted fire.

She planned to take records.

Then died.

It was not random.

Who set?

Could be Victor Vale or Malcolm.

Evidence old.

Then one letter never delivered:

Dad,

Dominic is not the enemy.

That sentence echoed my father’s later letter to me:

Do not trust anyone who tells you Salvatore Marquetti is your enemy.

History repeated.

The Brooks family spent generations being told wrong person was danger.

Then I understood why Malcolm said I signed like Rose.

He had seen her hands.

He had known her personally.

Maybe exploited inability of hearing people around her to understand.

Silence as weapon.

Exactly what coworkers tried with Salvatore.

Exactly what Adrian tried with me.

People mistake not hearing for not knowing.

People mistake not speaking for weakness.

My family story was built on that mistake.

Then federal investigation moved.

Malcolm’s alive status verified through financial evidence, but location unknown.

Old cases reopened.

Voss-Brooks legitimate assets entered receivership.

I did not become mafia heiress.

I refused that framing.

Lawyers separated lawful property from criminal proceeds.

Warehouse remained with Eli and me after trust correction.

Rent restitution from Frederick.

We sold? Maybe keep and redevelop community center.

Eli suggested converting part into accessible creative space for deaf and hard-of-hearing youth.

I loved it.

We did.

Not all at once.

Years.

Clean money only.

Restaurant fired Brett? Brett cooperated, faced consequences.

Frederick lost ownership amid fraud case.

Hale House restaurant taken by new operator.

I quit.

Obviously.

My last check finally included unpaid overtime after wage investigation expanded to dozens employees.

Class settlement.

Kitchen workers recovered wages.

That mattered.

Then I did something I had never planned.

I finished ASL interpreter certification training? Careful professional certification requires advanced proficiency, but in fiction over time. I enrolled in advanced program.

Not for Salvatore.

For me.

For Eli.

For Rose.

Salvatore and I stayed in contact.

Complicated.

He was not safe fairy-tale billionaire.

His family had criminal history.

He admitted it.

I set boundaries.

No gifts.

No money.

No “protection” without consent.

He respected them.

Mostly.

He funded nothing in my name.

Good.

Sometimes he came to community center.

Kids loved mocking his formal signing style.

He pretended offense.

Eli adored him.

That annoyed me.

Then one night, two years later, we stood outside renovated warehouse.

Sign above door:

ROSE BROOKS CENTER FOR VISUAL LANGUAGE & ARTS.

Salvatore looked at it.

Then signed:

YOUR GRANDFATHER WOULD HATE THIS.

I laughed.

“Why?”

TOO MUCH GLASS.

Probably.

Then:

ROSE WOULD LOVE IT.

I looked at him.

“How do you know?”

He pulled envelope.

Dominic’s.

His uncle had written one letter before death.

Never sent.

To Daniel Brooks.

Salvatore found in family safe.

Daniel,

Tell your father I never stopped loving Rose.

My chest tightened.

Then:

If anything happens to me, Malcolm is still alive.

Dominic knew five years ago.

Then:

Adrian is not the real successor.

Who?

A woman.

Name:

Eleanor Voss.

Malcolm’s daughter.

Publicly dead as infant? Maybe.

Let's build cliffhanger.

Dominic wrote:

Malcolm has a daughter nobody knows about.

She runs the legitimate companies while the men fight over shadows.

Name:

Elena Voss.

Age now around forty.

Then photo.

A woman.

I recognized her.

My stomach dropped.

Not restaurant staff.

Not police.

Community center director.

The woman who had taught my first ASL class four years ago.

Dr. Elena Voss.

She had encouraged me every Wednesday.

Corrected my handshape.

Asked about Eli.

Asked where I worked.

I had thought she was kind.

Salvatore stared.

“You know her?”

I nodded slowly.

“She taught me to sign.”

His face changed.

Then phone rang.

Elena.

I answered.

No voice.

Of course.

Video call.

She appeared on screen.

Silver streak in dark hair.

Calm face.

Hands raised.

She signed:

HANNAH. I WAS WONDERING WHEN DOMINIC’S LETTER WOULD REACH YOU.

My heart pounded.

I signed:

WHO ARE YOU?

She smiled sadly.

THE PERSON WHO MADE SURE YOU WERE ASSIGNED TO SALVATORE’S PRIVATE ROOM THAT NIGHT.

I stopped breathing.

Brett had thought prank was his idea.

Frederick thought he controlled assignment.

Adrian thought he controlled chaos.

Apparently none did.

I signed:

WHY?

Elena’s expression changed.

BECAUSE MY FATHER WAS WATCHING YOU.

Malcolm.

Alive.

Then:

AND I NEEDED TO KNOW WHETHER YOU WOULD REPEAT ROSE’S MISTAKE.

My hands shook.

WHAT MISTAKE?

Elena stared into camera.

Then signed slowly:

TRUSTING A MARQUETTI.

Salvatore went still beside me.

I looked at him.

Then back at screen.

Elena continued:

THE FIRE THAT KILLED ROSE WAS NOT ORDERED BY MALCOLM VOSS.

My chest tightened.

Then:

IT WAS ORDERED BY DOMINIC MARQUETTI’S FATHER.

Salvatore’s face drained.

No.

Two families.

Forty years of blame.

Wrong direction again.

Then Elena signed one final sentence:

AND SALVATORE ALREADY KNOWS WHY.

The call ended.

I turned toward him.

He did not look away.

His hands rose slowly.

But before he could sign, a black sedan stopped across the street.

An elderly man stepped out.

Silver hair.

Cane.

Security moved.

Salvatore froze.

I recognized him from the old ledger photographs.

Malcolm Voss.

The man everyone thought had been dead for fifteen years.

He looked directly through the glass doors of Rose Brooks Center.

Then lifted his hands.

Not toward Salvatore.

Toward me.

His ASL was perfect.

HANNAH, BEFORE YOU BELIEVE ELENA—ASK SALVATORE WHO REALLY STARTED THE FIRE.

Then he smiled.

May you like

And signed:

BECAUSE YOUR FAMILY HAS BEEN protecting THE WRONG MAN FOR FORTY YEARS.
