Chapter 7 - MARCO’S DISAPPEARANCE WAS CONNECTED TO ELI’S HIT-AND-RUN

Police found Adrian’s SUV abandoned near the river.

No Marco.

No Adrian.

Inside:

Blood.

Not much.

Enough for testing.

Marco’s phone.

Broken.

And one hearing-aid battery case.

Not Marco’s.

Eli recognized it.

His.

The case he carried the night of hit-and-run.

My stomach dropped.

Why was something from Eli’s accident inside Adrian’s current SUV?

Evidence preserved for eleven months.

Trophy?

Leverage?

Then fingerprint:

Colin Drake.

The detective had handled accident evidence.

He may have taken it.

Placed in Adrian’s vehicle later? Why?

Then recovered messages between Adrian and Colin.

ADRIAN:

BROOKS BOY STILL HAS COPY.

COLIN:

HE WON’T TALK.

ADRIAN:

SISTER?

COLIN:

DOESN’T KNOW.

Then eleven months later:

COLIN:

SHE KNOWS NOW.

ADRIAN:

THEN MARQUETTI KNOWS.

Marco disappeared because he may have known something about old accident.

Why?

Marco had reviewed traffic camera footage for Salvatore privately after official cameras “failed.”

He found hidden clip showing Adrian’s car at loading dock when Eli was hit.

He saved it.

Colin learned.

Marco became target.

Where did he hide footage?

Salvatore signed:

WITH ME? NO.

Then perhaps he left copy with someone.

Police searched Marco apartment.

Found ASL notebooks.

One page:

BROOKS / 11:42 / LOADING DOCK / SILVER CAR / DRIVER NOT ADRIAN.

Driver not Adrian.

Who?

Photo still inside notebook.

Blurry.

Woman.

Frederick’s wife?

No spouse mentioned.

Zoom.

Aunt Linda?

No.

I stared.

Brett leaned closer.

“That’s Vanessa Hale.”

Who?

Frederick’s daughter.

I knew Vanessa.

Thirty-one.

Restaurant marketing director.

Rarely onsite.

Polished.

Friendly.

Always called me “sweetie.”

She drove Adrian’s car the night Eli was hit.

Why?

Maybe affair.

Business partner.

Then records:

Vanessa Hale and Adrian had joint LLC.

She handled digital payroll system.

She may be architect behind identity theft.

Frederick perhaps protecting daughter.

Then Vanessa disappeared same night basement cleared.

Flight?

No.

Phone off.

Her apartment empty.

Then Salvatore signed:

SHE WAS AT MATTEO’S CLUB THE NIGHT HE WAS SHOT.

Another link.

Vanessa knew my brother’s accident and Salvatore’s brother shooting.

Maybe central.

Then Marco’s blood? Lab came.

Blood in SUV belonged to Marco.

Enough to confirm injury, not death.

Search intensified.

Salvatore became restless.

He wanted to act outside police.

I could see it.

I signed:

DON’T.

He stared.

HE IS MY FRIEND.

AND IF YOU DO SOMETHING THEY CAN USE, YOU HELP THEM.

His jaw tightened.

Then:

YOU SOUND LIKE YOUR FATHER.

That stopped me.

Dad used to say:

“Don’t give bad people the reaction they planned for.”

I had forgotten.

Then Salvatore signed:

I HATED WHEN HE SAID IT TOO.

Despite everything, I smiled.

Then Tomas discovered Marco’s smartwatch emergency ping.

Industrial district.

Warehouse.

Not mine.

Old cold-storage facility owned by Vale Logistics.

Police entered.

Marco found alive.

Bruised.

Concussed.

Hand injury.

But alive.

Adrian gone.

Vanessa gone.

Marco communicated via sign because jaw injured.

He told:

Adrian kidnapped him.

Wanted traffic footage.

Marco had copy hidden.

Refused.

Then Vanessa arrived.

She was angry with Adrian.

Not allied fully.

She shouted:

“You said nobody gets hurt again.”

Again.

Meaning Eli accident.

Maybe Vanessa drove but didn’t intend hit?

Marco signed she argued.

Adrian said:

“Your father should have handled Brooks years ago.”

So Frederick involved earlier.

Then Vanessa helped Marco escape restraint partially before leaving.

Why?

Guilt?

Fear?

She may not be mastermind.

Then Marco revealed traffic footage.

Driver night Eli hit:

Vanessa.

But footage showed Eli stepping behind vehicle as it reversed suddenly.

Was it intentional?

Car accelerated.

Could be.

Then after impact, Adrian exited passenger side.

He looked at Eli.

Then pulled Vanessa away from driver seat and drove off.

Vanessa was crying.

Maybe accident during argument?

Need more.

Audio no.

Then another camera angle showed Eli had been confronting them holding phone.

Vanessa grabbed for it through window.

Car moved.

Hit him.

Could be reckless rather than attempted murder.

Adrian chose not to call ambulance.

That was damning.

Then who called 911?

Anonymous.

Timestamp 90 seconds later.

Phone burner.

Location near scene.

Salvatore.

He had been following Adrian.

He called emergency services but didn’t reveal identity because illegal surveillance concerns.

That was why Dad’s letter said Salvatore kept us alive? More past. Here he helped Eli too without us knowing.

Then Marco signed:

SALVATORE PAID ELI’S HOSPITAL BILL.

I looked at him.

“What?”

Salvatore looked annoyed Marco told.

The anonymous $3,000 credit?

Linda did some, but remaining larger bills?

Marquetti foundation.

Why?

Dad’s debt.

Again.

I felt overwhelmed.

“I don’t want charity.”

Salvatore signed:

IT WASN’T CHARITY.

Pause.

I OWED DANIEL.

Then:

NOW I OWE ELI.

“For what?”

Marco answered.

Eli’s copied data included evidence clearing Salvatore’s brother Matteo of an accusation Adrian used to justify police raids.

Eli had unknowingly helped them.

Everyone tied.

Then Marco gave us one more thing.

Adrian had asked repeatedly:

“Where is Daniel’s second ledger?”

My father had more evidence.

Where?

Maybe warehouse.

Aunt Linda knew first key.

Second ledger?

She didn’t.

Then I remembered Dad’s old toolbox.

Still in our apartment storage.

Eli and I had never opened bottom compartment because lock rusted.

We opened.

Inside:

Notebook.

Not financial.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

And one photograph.

Frederick Hale.

Adrian Vale.

Colin Drake.

Vanessa Hale.

And Salvatore’s uncle Dominic Marquetti.

All together.

Salvatore went still.

His uncle had been murdered five years earlier.

Officially rival violence.

But photo suggested Dominic had once worked with Adrian.

Then Dad’s note:

THEY ARE ALL WORKING FOR THE SAME MAN.

My stomach dropped.

Who?

Next page:

A single name.

MALCOLM VOSS.

I had never heard it.

Salvatore had.

His face drained.

Then he signed:

THAT MAN IS DEAD.

Of course.

“Are you sure?”

Salvatore stared at the name.

May you like

Then slowly shook his head.

NO.
