Chapter 5 - MY FATHER HAD BEEN SALVATORE’S FIRST INTERPRETER

I thought I had misunderstood the sign.
I hadn’t.
Salvatore repeated slowly.
YOUR FATHER TAUGHT ME ASL.
My father never told me he knew Salvatore.
Then I remembered.
Dad had signed with Eli before illness took most of Eli’s hearing.
He knew more ASL than I realized.
Where did he learn?
Salvatore explained.
He lost hearing at seventeen after an explosion.
Not criminal.
A warehouse accident.
At the same warehouse my father later owned.
My stomach dropped.
Salvatore had been working there as teenager under his uncle.
A pressure tank exploded.
Three workers injured.
Salvatore lost most hearing permanently.
Daniel Brooks was foreman.
He pulled Salvatore out.
Visited hospital.
Learned ASL alongside him.
For two years, Dad helped Salvatore communicate at work while he adjusted.
Then why did they separate?
Adrian Vale.
He took over logistics operations.
Used warehouse for illegal storage.
Dad objected.
Salvatore’s family also objected.
Power struggle.
Then rumors started.
Salvatore became “dangerous deaf kid.”
Adrian became businessman.
Public stories reversed reality.
Did Salvatore become mafia-connected later?
Yes.
He did not deny it.
He signed:
MY FAMILY IS NOT CLEAN.
Good.
No mythology.
Then:
BUT ADRIAN HAS BEEN TRYING TO TAKE OUR TERRITORY AND OUR BUSINESSES FOR YEARS.
He meant influence, contracts, clubs, transport.
Some legal.
Some not.
I did not ask for details.
I did ask:
“Did Dad work for you?”
Salvatore shook his head.
HE WORKED FOR HIMSELF.
Then:
HE HELPED ME WHEN NOBODY ELSE WOULD.
That landed.
My father had spent years teaching me to keep distance from trouble.
Yet he had been surrounded by it.
Then Salvatore told me Dad called him a month before death.
Wanted help getting Adrian out of warehouse.
Salvatore agreed to meet.
Dad never arrived.
Then died.
“Heart attack.”
Salvatore signed:
I DIDN’T BELIEVE IT.
“Did you investigate?”
YES.
Nothing definitive.
Dad had known heart condition.
Could have been natural.
But his medications disappeared after death.
Medical file partially missing.
Then one name kept appearing around estate:
Frederick Hale.
Restaurant owner.
Why?
Frederick had been Dad’s accountant.
I stared.
“He never told me.”
Of course not.
After Dad died, Frederick became trustee of warehouse.
He should have notified me when trust passed property.
He didn’t.
Instead, he leased it to Adrian.
Then hired me.
That might be breach of fiduciary duty at minimum.
Then blue? no need.
The drive contained trust statements.
Warehouse generated $22,000 monthly rent.
For six years:
$1.5 million plus.
Where did money go?
Not to me.
Trust account showed expenses.
Repairs.
Taxes.
Legal.
Then transfers:
HALE HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT.
Frederick’s company.
He siphoned most.
I had been working double shifts while a property I owned generated more money per month than I earned in a year.
My hands shook.
Eli looked sick.
“You could have gone to school.”
I almost cried.
He blamed himself?
No.
I signed:
THIS IS NOT YOUR FAULT.
Then one payment stood out.
$6,000 monthly to:
BROOKS FAMILY SUPPORT.
I never received.
Who did?
Account owner:
Linda Brooks.
My mother.
I froze.
Mom died when I was nineteen.
No.
Another Linda?
My aunt Linda.
Dad’s sister.
She lived in Wisconsin.
We barely spoke after Dad died.
I called.
No answer.
Then Caleb? Salvatore's attorney found account opened by Linda twelve years ago.
Still active.
Withdrawals continued.
Maybe Aunt Linda knew trust.
Then she finally called back.
“Hannah?”
“Did Dad own a warehouse?”
Silence.
That answered.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
She began crying.
“Daniel made me promise.”
“Why?”
“He said if anything happened to him, you and Eli had to stay away until the lease ended.”
“What lease?”
“Vale.”
My stomach tightened.
Dad knew Adrian dangerous.
He hid ownership to protect us.
Then why Frederick trustee?
Because Dad trusted him.
Mistake.
Aunt Linda received $6,000 monthly to keep taxes and family emergency reserve? She said she used some for Dad’s old obligations, saved rest.
“How much is left?”
“Almost four hundred thousand.”
I stopped.
She had protected some money.
Why not send us?
“Your father said not until Adrian was gone.”
Again.
Protection through secrecy.
Then she said:
“There’s something else Daniel left.”
“What?”
“A key.”
To warehouse sub-basement.
Why?
“He said if Salvatore ever came asking, give it to him.”
Salvatore stared when I translated.
Then Aunt Linda said:
“And Hannah?”
“Yes?”
“Your father wrote your name on the envelope too.”
We drove to Wisconsin with police? Better send courier due safety. Linda delivered through attorney.
Inside envelope:
Key.
Letter.
Dad’s handwriting.
Hannah,
If you are reading this, then either I was wrong about Frederick or Adrian finally pushed too far.
My heart tightened.
Then:
Do not trust anyone who tells you Salvatore Marquetti is your enemy.
I looked at him.
He stared at letter.
Then final line:
Because if I die before I can tell you the truth—
Salvatore is the reason you and Eli are still alive.
I looked up.
“What did he do?”
Salvatore’s hands moved slowly.
I STOPPED ADRIAN FROM TAKING YOU.
The room went cold.
“Taking me where?”
He looked at Eli.
Then me.
WHEN YOU WERE SIXTEEN, ADRIAN PLANNED TO USE YOU TO FORCE YOUR FATHER TO SIGN OVER THE WAREHOUSE.
I remembered one night.
Dad picked me up from school unexpectedly.
Made us stay with Aunt Linda for two weeks.
Told me neighborhood robbery.
It wasn’t.
Salvatore had learned Adrian’s plan and warned Dad.
My entire childhood shifted.
Then Salvatore signed:
YOUR FATHER SAVED MY LIFE ONCE.
Pause.
I PAID HIM BACK.
Then Tomas entered with news.
Police had searched restaurant basement.
Computers gone.
Hard drives wiped.
Someone moved everything within hours.
Only one person knew authorities were coming soon enough.
Frederick.
But he had been detained for questioning.
Then security showed loading dock footage.
A woman entered with master keys.
Carried three boxes.
Face visible.
I stopped breathing.
Aunt Linda.
My father’s sister.
