Chapter 4 - SALVATORE DID NOT SEND MEN TO HURT COLIN

Salvatore did something I did not expect.

He called the police.

Not Colin.

A different unit.

Internal Affairs.

Then his attorney.

Then Eli.

Everything documented.

No street justice.

No whispered order.

No man disappearing into an alley.

That was when I understood the difference between Salvatore’s reputation and the man in front of me.

He lived inside danger.

That did not mean he solved every problem with violence.

Eli refused to open the door.

Colin kept knocking.

Then left when two patrol cars arrived.

He claimed he was “checking on a witness.”

No warrant.

No active case.

Bad explanation.

Internal Affairs took notice.

Eli was moved somewhere safe.

I went to meet him.

Salvatore came too, but stayed outside the interview room.

Why?

“Family first,” Tomas translated.

I appreciated that.

Eli looked smaller than I remembered.

Not physically.

Guilty.

“I’m sorry.”

I signed:

FOR WHAT?

I SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU.

“Yes.”

Then:

BUT YOU WERE WORKING TWO JOBS.

“That doesn’t mean you protect me by lying.”

His face tightened.

YOU DO THE SAME THING.

I stopped.

He was right.

I had hidden bills.

Stress.

How little money we had.

I called it protection.

Different scale.

Same instinct.

I sat beside him.

“Show us the drive.”

Eli had hidden it inside an old hearing-aid case at our aunt’s house.

Smart.

Police collected it under warrant and forensic chain.

Data shocked everyone.

Payroll theft.

Supplier fraud.

Gambling ledgers.

Bribes.

Payments to Colin Drake.

Payments to Frederick.

Payments to Brett.

And payments to a name I recognized instantly.

DANIEL BROOKS.

My father.

Dead six years.

I stared.

“No.”

My father had worked construction.

Quiet man.

Loved baseball.

Taught Eli basic signs before either of us formally learned ASL.

Why was his name inside Adrian Vale’s financial ledger?

Payment history began twelve years earlier.

$4,000 monthly.

Then $8,000.

Then stopped after Dad died.

Purpose:

D.B. PROPERTY ACCESS.

What property?

Salvatore’s people traced.

A warehouse on West Side.

Owned by Brooks Industrial Holdings.

I had never heard of it.

Beneficial owner:

Daniel Brooks.

My father owned a warehouse?

No.

He rented apartment his whole life.

Then title records showed he inherited property from an uncle and never told us.

Why?

Warehouse leased to—

Vale Logistics.

Adrian.

My father had been Adrian’s landlord.

That alone wasn't criminal.

Then Eli found file:

BROOKS AGREEMENT.

Signed by Dad.

Allowed sub-basement storage.

Cash rent.

No inspection.

Maybe he turned blind eye.

Then one clause:

If Daniel dies, ownership transfers to Hannah Brooks.

I stopped breathing.

“What?”

I owned the warehouse.

For six years.

No one told me.

How?

Dad’s estate attorney?

There had been no formal estate process we knew. He died with little.

Apparently warehouse sat inside trust.

Trustee:

Frederick Hale.

My restaurant owner.

Everything connected.

Frederick had controlled property I unknowingly owned.

Used rent.

Used basement.

Used my identity.

Then why employ me?

Because keeping me close made monitoring easy.

He could intercept mail.

Gather signatures.

Know whether I discovered inheritance.

My job was not random.

I remembered how I got hired.

Walk-in interview.

Frederick said:

“Your last name sounds familiar.”

I thought small talk.

He knew.

He knew exactly whose daughter I was.

Then Salvatore signed:

YOUR FATHER MAY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH ADRIAN.

I hated that.

But evidence.

Need precision.

Maybe landlord.

Maybe more.

Then another file.

Audio transcription.

Daniel Brooks:

“You said no drugs.”

Adrian Vale:

“I said nothing comes through that door you don’t approve.”

Daniel:

“There are guns downstairs.”

My skin went cold.

Dad knew.

Then:

“I’m done.”

Adrian:

“You don’t walk away after twelve years.”

Daniel:

“Watch me.”

The recording date:

Three weeks before Dad died.

Official cause:

Heart attack at fifty-three.

No suspicious death.

No autopsy.

My pulse changed.

Maybe natural.

Maybe not.

Do not jump.

Then final transcript:

Adrian:

“Your daughter works downtown now?”

Dad:

“Leave Hannah out of this.”

Adrian:

“Then keep your agreement.”

I felt sick.

Adrian had known about me before restaurant.

Then Frederick later hired me.

The network followed Dad’s family.

Then Eli whispered:

“There’s another folder.”

Name:

SALVATORE MARQUETTI.

Salvatore looked up.

Inside were surveillance photographs.

His restaurants.

Cars.

Family.

Brother Matteo.

And one photo of Salvatore standing outside a hospital.

Beside him—

my father.

Alive in photo.

Date seven years ago.

One year before Dad’s death.

Salvatore stared at image.

Then signed:

I KNEW HIM.

I stopped breathing.

“How?”

May you like

Salvatore’s face changed.

YOUR FATHER TAUGHT ME SIGN LANGUAGE.
