Chapter 9 - The Midnight Handcuffs

At two o'clock in the morning, the central processing facility of the Metropolitan Correctional Center in lower Manhattan was bathed in harsh fluorescent glare.
Charles Sterling sat on a cold stainless-steel bench in Holding Cell B, wearing a faded orange Department of Corrections jumpsuit.
His bespoke tuxedo had been confiscated, his platinum cufflinks bagged into evidence, and his gold signet ring stripped from his finger.
Across the concrete corridor in the female holding area, Beatrice was weeping continuously, clutching the iron bars of her cell in sheer exhaustion.
Special Prosecutor Marcus Vance and Assistant United States Attorney Claire Montgomery entered the interrogation room, dropping three heavy blue binders onto the metal table.
Charles looked up with hollow, bloodshot eyes, his hands shaking uncontrollably as the marshals led him to the metal chair.
“Charles, your offshore accounts in Zurich and Panama have been completely liquidated under international asset recovery orders,” Prosecutor Montgomery announced.
“Every dummy corporation, every shell trust, and every property deed you forged over the past twenty years has been authenticated by federal forensic examiners.”
Charles wiped his nose with the rough sleeve of his prison uniform, his voice cracking in pathetic, desperate supplication.
“Claire, please… I will sign a full confession! I will testify against my offshore bankers! Just give me house arrest at my Hamptons home!”
Prosecutor Montgomery let out a cold, mocking laugh, opening the second binder to reveal the property transfer certificate.
“You don't own a Hamptons home, Charles,” Montgomery stated with chilling finality.
“The Hamptons estate was deeded to the Katherine Montgomery Charitable Foundation at midnight.”
“And under federal mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines for corporate fraud exceeding one hundred million dollars, you are facing forty-five years in federal prison without parole.”

Charles collapsed forward onto the stainless-steel table, his forehead hitting the metal as he sobbed in raw, hopeless defeat.
The empire of lies he had built on stolen blood had been permanently eradicated, leaving him with nothing but a lifetime in a windowless concrete box.
