Chapter 7 - The Federal Warrant at the Altar

The heavy mahogany double doors at the entrance of the ballroom swung open once more with concussive force.

A squad of eight federal marshals in dark tactical windbreakers entered the hall, led by Special Agent Marcus Reed of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Agent Reed walked with crisp, commanding strides down the center aisle, holding a red-sealed federal arrest warrant stamped with the seal of the United States District Court.

“Charles Sterling and Beatrice Sterling, keep your hands visible and remain on the floor,” Agent Reed commanded in a voice of pure legal authority.

Charles looked up, his bloodshot eyes widening in raw, animal panic as he saw the steel handcuffs gleaming on the marshals’ belts.

“Agent Reed… wait! I am a member of the Governor’s Economic Council!” Charles pleaded, his voice shaking with terror.

“You cannot arrest me without consulting my corporate legal team!”

Agent Reed stepped onto the raised platform, tossing a copy of the federal indictment directly onto the floral altar.

“Your corporate legal team resigned forty-five minutes ago when our forensic examiners seized your primary accounting servers in Midtown, Charles.”

“You are charged with federal bank fraud, interstate money laundering, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement exceeding one hundred and eighty million dollars.”

“And under New York Penal Law Section 120.05, you are charged with second-degree felony assault with intent to cause physical injury.”

Two federal marshals stepped forward, grabbing Charles by his arms and pulling him to his feet with professional, unyielding force.

The sharp, metallic click of heavy steel handcuffs echoed through the cavernous ballroom as Charles’s arms were wrenched behind his back.

Another female marshal secured Beatrice’s wrists in matching restraints, ignoring her hysterical shrieks as her lilac gown was rumpled against the table.

“Vivienne! Tell them to stop!” Charles screamed, thrashing against the marshals as he was dragged toward the aisle.

“I gave you life! I am your father!”

I looked at the broken man who had tormented my youth, feeling neither hatred nor pity, only the profound peace of absolute justice.

“You gave me a name you disgraced, Charles,” I said in a clear, resonant voice that chilled the room.

“And tonight, I am taking my mother’s name back.”
