Chapter 13 - The Bitter Taste of Poverty

Six months after the historic stock exchange launch, the cold winter wind blew through a modest commercial laundromat in Queens.

Charlotte Sterling stood behind the service counter in a stained grey apron, her hair tied back in a messy ponytail, her hands dry and cracked from detergent.

She was folding heavy industrial hotel towels for minimum wage, her back aching from standing on the concrete floor for ten consecutive hours.

Beside the front door, my mother Beatrice sat on a plastic folding chair, wearing a faded coat from a local thrift store, clipping coupons from a free newspaper.

A small television mounted in the corner of the laundromat broadcasted the evening news, displaying live footage of the annual Met Gala in Manhattan.

The screen showed Dominic and me stepping out of an armored Maybach onto the red carpet, dressed in breathtaking couture, surrounded by cheering crowds.

The news anchor’s voice carried across the quiet laundromat: ”Chairperson Vivienne Vance and her husband Dominic Vance announce a hundred-million-dollar gift to the New York Public Library system tonight.”

Charlotte stopped folding, staring at the glowing television screen with tears of profound, agonizing humiliation welling in her eyes.

She remembered the night at the Plaza Hotel when she had laughed as our father shoved me into the fountain.

She remembered calling me a worthless spinster who had no right to breathe the air in her ballroom.

Now, the sister she had mocked was ruling an empire of billions, while she spent her days scrubbing hotel linens to buy a loaf of bread.

Beatrice looked at the screen, letting out a heavy, defeated sigh as she lowered her head into her hands.

“We had a queen living under our roof, Charlotte,” Beatrice wept softly in the dim light of the laundromat.

“And we threw her into the water for a crown made of dust.”

Charlotte wiped a tear from her cheek with her rough apron, picked up the next towel, and continued folding in the cold silence of her new reality.
