Chapter 8 - The Secret Benefactor

At one o'clock that afternoon, I sat in the private dining salon of the Chicago Athletic Association, reviewing the bankruptcy filings with Marcus Cole.

The double mahogany doors opened, and a tall, broad-shouldered man with silver-streaked dark hair and striking hazel eyes walked into the room.

He was dressed in a simple, perfectly tailored dark charcoal suit, carrying himself with the quiet, effortless confidence of a man who had conquered his own demons.

It was Alexander Sterling—Julian’s thirty-eight-year-old elder half-brother, the legitimate firstborn son of Marcus Sterling from his first marriage.

Ten years ago, Eleanor had orchestrated a ruthless smear campaign against Alexander, framing him for corporate embezzlement to force him out of the family empire.

Alexander had walked away from Chicago without a single dime, relocating to London where he built a multi-billion-dollar green maritime energy conglomerate from scratch.

“Hello, Vivienne,” Alexander said, his deep baritone warm and steady as he extended a hand.

“I watched the video of your ballroom exit from my private jet over the Atlantic; it was the most magnificent thing this city has witnessed in fifty years.”

I smiled genuinely for the first time in three days, shaking his hand and motioning him to take the seat across from me.

“Thank you for flying in on such short notice, Alexander,” I said, handing him a cup of fresh espresso.

“I believe you have a few unfinished debts to collect from Eleanor and Julian.”

Alexander took a slow sip of the espresso, his hazel eyes darkening with a decade of suppressed resolve.

“Eleanor spent ten years telling this city that my mother was an unhinged socialite and that I was a disgraced thief,” Alexander said softly.

“She erased every trace of my mother’s name from the Sterling Foundation and replaced it with her own portrait in the grand gallery.”

“Well, Alexander,” I said, opening a leather-bound corporate acquisition folder and sliding it across the linen table.

“This morning, Apex Global Partners purchased the sovereign senior debt notes on the Sterling ancestral estate in Lake Forest from their primary creditor.”

Alexander opened the folder, his breath hitching slightly as his eyes scanned the foreclosure transfer certificate.

“The mortgage note is currently in full default following Julian’s failure to post the forty-five-million-dollar collateral,” I explained.

“Which means you and I now hold the absolute, uncontested legal right to foreclose on the ancestral manor at four o'clock today.”

Alexander looked up from the document, a slow, brilliant smile breaking across his handsome face.

“My father built that manor for my mother before Eleanor ever stepped foot in Illinois, Vivienne.”

“Then let us go home, Alexander,” I said, rising from the table and smoothing my suit.

“And let us throw the trespassers out into the street where they belong.”
