Chapter 12 - The Interrogation Room Confessions

By midnight, the central interrogation suites of the Dirksen Federal Building in downtown Chicago were consumed by the frantic sounds of a collapsing criminal syndicate.
In Interrogation Room A, Julian Sterling sat shackled to the heavy steel table, his tuxedo shredded, his face streaked with tears and snot.
Across from him sat Assistant United States Attorney Claire Montgomery and Detective Miller, their legal folders spread out in meticulous order.
“Julian, your mistress, Chloe Laurent, just signed a full thirty-page sworn proffer agreement in the adjacent room,” Prosecutor Montgomery stated calmly.
“She gave us the encrypted passkeys to your offshore accounts in Nassau and provided the audio files of your mother planning the digitalis poisoning.”
Julian gasped for air, his hands shaking violently against the cold metal handcuffs.
“Chloe lied! She was the one who demanded the forty million dollars!” Julian sobbed hysterically, completely unraveling in raw panic.
“It was my mother’s plan from the very beginning! Eleanor told me that if we didn’t seize Vivienne’s penthouse and her company title, the Russian loan sharks would kill us both!”
Detective Miller turned on the digital recording device, leaning forward over the table.
“State for the official record, Julian: Did you knowingly participate in the filing of a forged prenuptial agreement to steal Vivienne Vance’s assets?”
“Yes! Yes, I signed the authorization!” Julian screamed, breaking down into uncontrollable sobs.
“My mother paid Bradley Thorne fifty thousand dollars to use his notary seal! I’ll sign whatever you want, just please don’t send me to a maximum-security prison!”
Meanwhile, in Interrogation Room B, Eleanor sat staring at the blank concrete wall, her aristocratic composure completely shattered.
When the federal prosecutors played Julian’s recorded confession through the wall speakers, Eleanor let out a low, guttural wail of absolute betrayal.
“My own son…” Eleanor whispered, her trembling hands clutching her withered face.
“I gave him everything… I killed his father to give him an empire… and he throws me to the wolves to save his own skin.”
Prosecutor Montgomery walked into the room, placing the final capital murder indictment on the steel table before Eleanor’s eyes.
“Your son didn’t throw you to the wolves, Eleanor,” Montgomery said with cold, unyielding finality.

“You raised a wolf, and you taught him how to eat your own flesh.”
Eleanor picked up the pen with trembling, numb fingers and signed her unconditional confession to the murder of Marcus Sterling, closing the darkest chapter in Chicago’s corporate history.
