Chapter 3 - The Midnight Break-In

At precisely two-fifteen in the morning, the silent security alert pulsed three discrete vibrations against the smartwatch on my wrist.

I stood in the darkened second-floor mezzanine of the penthouse, looking down through the glass railing into the grand living room below.

The heavy reinforced steel entry door clicked with a soft mechanical hum as the electronic lock was bypassed using an emergency physical override key.

Julian had stolen that duplicate brass key from my vanity drawer three weeks ago, claiming he had lost his original gym fob.

The door swung open slowly, and Julian slipped inside, accompanied by a man dressed in a dark tactical windbreaker carrying a locksmith’s duffel bag.

Julian was still wearing his tuxedo trousers and a rumpled dress shirt, his hair disheveled, reeking of alcohol and desperate panic.

“The master floor safe is hidden behind the mahogany wainscoting in her private study,” Julian whispered to the locksmith.

“Crack the biometric keypad and pull the bearer bond binders and the original real estate title deeds before sunrise.”

“Are you sure your fiancée won't wake up?” the technician asked nervously, shining a narrow penlight across the parquet floor.

“She took two sleeping tablets before the gala; she sleeps like a corpse,” Julian sneered, stepping toward my office corridor.

“Once I have those physical deeds in my possession, our corporate attorneys will file the emergency possession lien at eight AM.”

I reached to the wall beside me and flipped the master architectural switch.

Blinding white stadium-grade halogen spotlights flared to life instantly, illuminating every square inch of the two-story living room in daylight brilliance.

Julian froze mid-step, shielding his eyes with his arm as a loud electronic alarm chime sounded through the ceiling speakers.

Standing at the top of the floating glass staircase, I looked down at him wearing a black tailored trench coat, my arms folded across my chest.

Flanking the double entrance doors behind Julian, four armed private tactical guards stepped out from the shadows with drawn tasers and body armor.

“Looking for the real estate deeds to my home, Julian?” I asked, my voice echoing off the twenty-foot ceilings with terrifying clarity.

Julian stumbled backward, his face turning the color of curdled milk as the locksmith immediately dropped his toolbag and raised his hands into the air.

“Vivienne… wait! This is a total misunderstanding!” Julian stammered, his eyes darting frantically between the armed security guards.

“I just came to collect my personal belongings and my watch collection from the master bedroom safe!”

“You don’t own a single watch in that safe, Julian,” I replied calmly, walking slowly down the glass staircase.

“And breaking into a private residence with a professional safe-cracker at two in the morning constitutes felony aggravated burglary under Illinois law.”

I gestured slightly with two fingers to the lead security officer.

“Detain both intruders in the private lobby, confiscate their digital devices, and call Detective Miller from the Central Financial Crimes Unit.”

Julian began to thrash hysterically as the two security officers pinned his arms behind his back and clicked heavy steel zip-ties around his wrists.

“You can’t do this to me, Vivienne! I was your fiancé! We were supposed to be married tonight!”

May you like

I stopped three feet from him, looking down at his pathetic, sweating face with absolute, unyielding disgust.

“You stopped being my fiancé the second you tried to rob the woman who paid for every meal you ate this year.”
