Chapter 10 - The Grand Gala Trap

The evening arrived in a spectacular shower of golden light across the grand plaza of the Chicago Symphony Center.
The annual Benefactor’s Gala was the crown jewel of the autumn social season, packed with five hundred of the country’s most powerful figures.
Eleanor Sterling, having posted an emergency two-million-dollar unsecured appearance bond through a corrupt bail bondsman, strode into the grand foyer.
She was dressed in an extravagant midnight-black velvet gown, wearing heavy makeup to conceal the bruises of her morning interrogation.
Beside her stood Chloe Laurent, draped in emerald silk, attempting to maintain an aura of aristocratic elegance amidst the hostile whispers of the crowd.
“Keep your head high, Chloe,” Eleanor hissed under her breath as cameras flashed around them.
“Our legal team in New York is filing the emergency injunction against Vivienne tonight; this little public storm will pass by tomorrow morning.”
“What about the forty-million-dollar extortion wire?” Chloe whispered nervously, clutching her diamond evening clutch.
“The countdown expires in fifteen minutes; Vivienne has no choice but to pay if she wants to protect her corporate reputation!”
Suddenly, the grand bronze entrance doors of the Symphony Center swung open with commanding majesty.
The entire five-story atrium dropped into an immediate, breathless silence as the string quartet ceased playing mid-measure.
Walking through the entrance side by side were Alexander Sterling and me, radiating absolute, breathtaking power and elegance.
I wore an exquisite, hand-embroidered royal sapphire evening gown with a high silk collar, adorned with the legendary Sterling heirloom diamond brooch that Marcus Sterling had given to Alexander’s mother thirty years ago.
Alexander looked magnificent in a bespoke black tuxedo with mother-of-pearl cufflinks, his commanding presence towering over the room.
Eleanor gasped, her champagne glass slipping from her paralyzed fingers and shattering on the parquet floor as she recognized the brooch on my chest.
“Alexander…?” Eleanor stammered, her voice carrying across the silent foyer.
“You… you were permanently disowned! You have no right to set foot in this city!”
Alexander stepped forward, looking down at his stepmother with the cold, unyielding majesty of a rightful king reclaiming his throne.

“I wasn’t disowned, Eleanor,” Alexander spoke in a voice that resonated through the entire grand hall.
“I just took ten years to return and reclaim everything you stole from my mother.”
