Chapter 9 - THE LAST SIGNATURE

The final trust document was buried beneath a series of legal safeguards.
My mother had created it before I was born.
It contained an extraordinary clause.
If I became the controlling beneficiary, the trust would activate.
But only after I signed a major acquisition.
The acquisition was designed to look like a business transaction.
In reality, it was a trigger.
Once activated, the trust would expose every hidden account connected to the network.
Every shell company.
Every illegal transfer.
Every person involved.
Including people no one suspected.
Michael had known.
Eleanor had known.
My father had known.
But nobody had understood the full design.
Not even my mother.
Because someone had altered the trust years after she died.
Daniel, the attorney handling the estate, discovered the alteration.
“The document was tampered with.”
“By whom?”
He showed me the signature.
I knew it immediately.
My father's.
I looked at him.
“You changed my mother's trust.”
He didn't deny it.
“I added a protection clause.”
“You lied to me.”
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
“That doesn't make it right.”
“No.”
He looked exhausted.
“It doesn't.”
Then he told me the truth.
He had altered the trust because he discovered that the organization was monitoring me.
If I inherited everything too early, they would kill me.
So he created the appearance that he controlled the assets.
He made me believe I had freedom.
But he was quietly protecting me.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because every person who knew the truth became a target.”
I looked at Cassandra.
She understood.
“So you let me hate you.”
My father nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I would rather have you hate me alive than love me dead.”
The words destroyed me.
For years, I had hated him.
Now I didn't know what to feel.
Then Daniel walked into the room.
“We have a problem.”
“What?”
“The trust activated.”
I looked at him.
“When?”
“Tonight.”
“What happens now?”
He handed me a tablet.
A list of transactions appeared.
Hundreds.
Then thousands.
Across the country.
The network was collapsing.
Bank accounts were frozen.
Companies were seized.
Executives were being detained.
But one account remained active.
One final account.
The account connected to the original organization.
“Who owns it?”
Daniel looked at me.
“You.”
I stared.
“That's impossible.”
“No.”
He turned the screen.
The account had been opened before I was born.
The beneficiary was my mother.
The secondary beneficiary was me.
The balance was staggering.
$1.4 billion.
Cassandra gasped.
I barely noticed.
Because beneath the balance was one final instruction.
TRANSFER UPON FAMILY REUNIFICATION.
I looked at my father.
Then Rebecca.
Then Cassandra.
Then the twins.
“What does family reunification mean?”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“It means your mother expected all of you to find each other.”
I felt tears rise.
My mother had planned for a future she would never see.
She had left us a map.
And we had finally followed it.
But the story wasn't finished.
Because the account had one more beneficiary.
Someone none of us recognized.
A child.
Born fifteen years before Luke and Violet.
I looked at the name.
My hands began shaking.
The beneficiary was listed as:
UNKNOWN HEIR.
And beneath it was an address.
Cassandra looked at me.
“Damon…”
“I know.”
We had spent years searching for the missing pieces of our family.
May you like
Now we had found one more.
And somewhere in America, another child was waiting.
