Chapter 14 - THE ROOM UNDER THE HOUSE

The key belonged to a door I had never seen.
We returned to my mother's old estate the next morning with federal agents surrounding the property.
The house had been empty since her death.
I had avoided coming back.
Too many memories.
Too many unanswered questions.
But now I knew there was something hidden beneath it.
We searched the basement.
Nothing.
The garage.
Nothing.
The library.
Nothing.
Then Cassandra noticed something.
A painting.
My mother's favorite landscape.
It was hanging slightly crooked.
She touched the frame.
"There's a draft."
We removed it.
Behind the painting was a narrow steel door.
The brass key fit perfectly.
Inside was a staircase.
It descended into darkness.
At the bottom was a room filled with shelves.
Documents.
Photographs.
Hard drives.
Bank records.
And dozens of boxes.
My mother's entire secret life was preserved underground.
Then I saw three boxes.
One had my name.
One had Cassandra's.
One had Luke and Violet's names.
Cassandra stepped backward.
"Why would your mother have files on us?"
I opened mine.
Inside were photographs of Cassandra from years before I met her.
School.
College.
Her first job.
Her family.
I looked at her.
"You knew my mother?"
"No."
She looked genuinely terrified.
Then she opened her box.
Inside was a photograph of her father.
Standing beside my mother.
Cassandra covered her mouth.
"My father told me he never knew her."
The photograph was dated twenty years earlier.
Then I opened the box marked Luke and Violet.
Inside was a medical report.
Their birth records.
Genetic analysis.
And one sentence circled in red.
Their existence changes the succession.
I felt cold.
"What does that mean?"
Agent Collins took the document.
Her expression changed.
"The children aren't just beneficiaries."
"What are they?"
She looked at me.
"They are the only legal descendants capable of activating the final trust."
Cassandra stared.
"So someone wanted them hidden."
"Yes."
"Who?"
Agent Collins didn't answer.
Because a gunshot sounded upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Another shot.
Then screaming.
We ran toward the staircase.
A security officer fell near the doorway.
Someone had breached the house.
Agent Collins ordered us back.
But the intruder didn't attack.
Instead, a small envelope slid down the stairs.
I picked it up.
My name was written across it.
Inside was another photograph.
My mother.
My father.
Eleanor.
And a fourth person.
Cassandra's father.
On the back was a sentence.
Four families built the network. Only one family can destroy it.
Then the basement lights went out.
A voice came through the darkness.
"You finally found the room."
I recognized it.
Thomas.
He stepped from behind the shelves.
But he wasn't holding a weapon.
He was holding a photograph of my mother.
And tears were running down his face.
"Your mother asked me to protect you."
I stared at him.
"Then why did you disappear?"
"Because I failed her once."
"How?"
Thomas looked at Cassandra.
"Because I helped your father disappear."
Cassandra's face went pale.
"Which father?"
May you like
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"Both."
