Chapter 12 - THE MAN MY FATHER BURIED

We landed in New York under heavy rain.
Thomas was gone.
Not arrested.
Not questioned.
Gone.
The moment the plane door opened, federal agents were waiting.
I expected panic.
Instead, one woman walked toward me and showed me a badge.
"Mr. Carter?"
"Yes."
"I'm Special Agent Mara Collins."
She looked at Cassandra.
Then at Luke and Violet.
"I apologize for approaching you like this, but Daniel asked us to meet you."
I glanced around.
"Where is Daniel?"
"His office."
"Why isn't he here?"
Her expression changed.
"Because someone broke into it."
My stomach dropped.
"When?"
"Forty minutes ago."
"What was taken?"
"Nothing."
I frowned.
"Nothing?"
"That's what concerns us."
She handed me a photograph.
Daniel's office looked untouched.
No broken windows.
No overturned furniture.
No missing computers.
But on his desk was a single object.
My mother's wedding photograph.
The back had been marked with three words.
ASK ABOUT HENRY.
I stared at the name.
"Who is Henry?"
Agent Collins looked at me carefully.
"Your father."
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I was exhausted.
"My father is dead."
"Yes."
"So why are we talking about him?"
"Because his death certificate may have been falsified."
Cassandra stepped closer.
"Are you saying Damon’s father is alive?"
"No."
Agent Collins paused.
"We're saying someone wanted everyone to believe he died when he did."
The next hour changed everything.
We were taken to a secure conference room.
A file was placed in front of me.
My father's name was on the cover.
Inside were photographs I had never seen.
My father meeting businessmen.
My father entering private aircraft.
My father standing beside Eleanor.
My father speaking with Michael.
The man who had once seemed like an ordinary businessman had apparently spent years operating in a world I knew nothing about.
"Why did my mother hide this?"
Agent Collins folded her hands.
"Because your father wasn't simply involved with the network."
"What was he?"
She looked at me.
"The person who originally built it."
Silence.
Cassandra squeezed my hand.
"No."
Agent Collins nodded.
"Your mother discovered what he was doing. She tried to expose him."
"But he died."
"That's the official story."
"What really happened?"
Agent Collins opened another file.
"Your mother staged his death."
I stared at her.
"She what?"
"She created a false death record and moved him into federal protection."
"Why?"
"Because your father agreed to testify."
I felt sick.
"So why did he disappear?"
Agent Collins looked down.
"Because he betrayed the agreement."
Cassandra whispered, "And Eleanor?"
"Eleanor was his closest associate."
The pieces began to connect.
The hidden heir.
The financial network.
My mother's trust.
The missing years.
The false identities.
But one question remained.
"Why did my mother never tell me?"
Agent Collins slid one final document toward me.
It was a letter.
My mother's handwriting.
I recognized it immediately.
The letter began with one sentence.
Damon, if you're reading this, your father has found you.
I couldn't breathe.
Then I read the final paragraph.
I didn't hide your father from you because I wanted to punish him. I hid him because he once tried to make you part of his empire.
Cassandra looked at me.
"Did he ever contact you?"
I shook my head.
"Not that I know of."
Agent Collins looked toward the door.
"That's what we need to determine."
Then the lights went out.
Someone screamed.
A security alarm erupted.
And in the darkness, I heard a man's voice.
"Damon."
I knew that voice.
It was impossible.
But I knew it.
May you like
My father's voice.
"Don't trust the woman standing beside you."
