Chapter 8 - MY MOTHER'S SECRET

My mother's name appeared on hundreds of documents.
She had designed the original financial structure.
She had created the trust.
She had established the offshore accounts.
She had even created Project Little Star.
But the documents revealed something nobody expected.
She hadn't created it to steal money.
She created it to protect people.
The children identified by the rare genetic marker were being targeted by a private organization that wanted their genetic information.
My mother had discovered the program.
She infiltrated it.
She redirected money.
She sabotaged operations.
She created false identities.
And she built a network designed to hide the children.
My father had continued her work after her death.
Eleanor had betrayed them.
Michael had eventually taken control of the criminal side.
But there was one missing piece.
Why had Cassandra and the twins been targeted?
The answer appeared in a medical file.
Luke and Violet carried the marker.
But so did I.
I stared at the report.
“That's impossible.”
My father looked at me.
“Your mother knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That you carried it.”
I felt dizzy.
She had spent my entire childhood protecting me.
She had known that one day someone might come looking.
“Why didn't she tell me?”
“Because you were a child.”
“What about when I grew up?”
My father looked away.
“Because she died before she could.”
I cried.
Not because I was angry.
Because suddenly I remembered things.
My mother checking my temperature when I was sick.
Making sure I never gave blood without her permission.
Telling me never to sign medical research consent forms without a lawyer.
I had thought she was simply cautious.
She wasn't.
She had been terrified.
Then Cassandra found another document.
A letter.
Addressed to me.
It had been written twenty-one years earlier.
I opened it.
My son,
If you are reading this, the people I feared have found you.
Do not trust anyone who tells you the family business is yours.
It isn't.
The company is a shield.
The money is a weapon.
And the trust exists for one purpose: to protect the children who come after you.
I stared at the final paragraph.
If you ever have children of your own, protect them differently than I protected you. Tell them the truth. Never make them carry the weight of your secrets.
I broke down.
Cassandra held my hand.
For three years, I had thought I had lost her.
For two years, I had believed I had been robbed of fatherhood.
Now I realized our entire relationship had been trapped inside a war neither of us understood.
Then an investigator entered.
“We found Michael.”
Everyone stood.
“Where?”
“He contacted us.”
“Why?”
“He wants immunity.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
The investigator handed me a phone.
Michael was on the screen.
“There’s one last thing you need to know.”
“What?”
“The Denver acquisition was never about the $780 million.”
“Then what was it about?”
“Your trust.”
My father went pale.
Michael continued.
“Someone needed Damon to sign because only his signature could activate the final transfer.”
“What transfer?”
“The one your mother designed.”
I looked at my father.
“What did she leave me?”
May you like
He whispered:
“Everything.”
