Chapter 16 - WHAT MY MOTHER DID

Samuel placed the ledger on the table.
No one touched it.
For years, I had imagined the final truth would feel like justice.
Instead, it felt like standing at the edge of a cliff.
I opened the cover.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Transfers.
Everything.
Then I saw my mother's name.
My hands began shaking.
"She was involved."
Samuel nodded.
"She was."
Cassandra looked at me.
"Maybe there's an explanation."
I turned the page.
There were millions of dollars transferred into accounts controlled by my mother.
But beneath every transaction was a handwritten note.
Protection.
Relocation.
Emergency shelter.
Witness payment.
My mother hadn't been taking the money.
She had been moving it.
Samuel laughed.
"She called herself a hero."
"You were stealing from families."
"I was building power."
"She stopped you."
"She betrayed me."
He looked at me.
"She chose you."
For the first time, his voice sounded human.
Almost hurt.
"She chose you over everything."
Then he revealed the final secret.
My mother hadn't created the foundation after discovering the network.
She had created it years earlier.
Because she knew the network would eventually collapse.
She had been preparing for that collapse her entire life.
"And the twins?"
Samuel's eyes moved toward Luke and Violet.
"They are the final heirs."
"Why?"
"Because the trust was designed to pass outside the bloodline of the original founders."
"And that means?"
"The network cannot legally reclaim the assets once your children activate the final succession."
Cassandra understood.
"They were targeting our children."
Samuel nodded.
"Yes."
I closed the ledger.
"You knew."
"I did."
"And you still let them come after us."
"I needed you to find the ledger."
"You used us."
"I gave you the truth."
"You endangered my family."
His expression became cold again.
"Your family was already endangered."
Agent Collins stepped forward.
"Samuel Carter, you're under arrest."
He didn't resist.
Instead, he looked at me.
"Before you take me away, ask your mother one final question."
"She's dead."
"I know."
"Then what question?"
He smiled.
"Ask why she never told you about the fourth heir."
Everyone froze.
"Fourth?"
Samuel was taken upstairs.
I turned toward Thomas.
"Who is the fourth heir?"
He looked at Cassandra.
Then at me.
"I don't know."
Agent Collins interrupted.
"We need to leave."
"Why?"
"Because someone just accessed the trust."
My phone buzzed.
A notification appeared.
Final succession attempt detected.
Then another.
Beneficiary: Unknown.
And beneath it:
Location: New York City.
Cassandra whispered:
"Someone is trying to take the trust right now."
I looked at Luke and Violet.
May you like
The nightmare wasn't over.
It had simply changed shape.
