Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Heritage

I unfolded the parchment, my father's distinctive, bold handwriting leaping off the aged paper like an echo from the past. The words carried the unmistakable authority of a man who knew he was surrounded by wolves and had laid a trap of his own.
To My Beloved Daughter, Sienna, the letter began, my vision swimming as I touched the dried ink. If you are reading this in the presence of Arthur, it means Victoria Sterling has finally attempted to execute the five-year succession clause in your marriage contract.
I knew six years ago that Victoria was sending her son to court you after my diagnosis, my father wrote. I allowed the courtship to proceed because I investigated Zachary myself and discovered the boy carried an honorable heart despite the monster who raised him.
I embedded a sovereign poison-pill clause within the Vance Foundation charter, the document continued. If Victoria or any Sterling entity attempts to seize your voting shares through an involuntary conservatorship, all four hundred million dollars instantly divert into an untouchable federal restitution fund.
Simultaneously, the unredacted digital audit of Victoria's pharmaceutical embezzlement will be automatically transmitted to the Department of Justice, the final paragraph stated. You only need to physically present this sealed original deed to the Federal District Court registrar before midnight.
I looked up at Zachary, who was staring at the floor, visibly shaken by the realization that my father had known the truth from the very beginning. "My father knew you were sent to spy on me, Zachary... and he trusted you anyway."
"Your father met me in secret at a diner in Gary, Indiana, two weeks before your wedding," Zachary confessed, his voice thick with emotion. "He told me that if I ever truly loved you, I would have to choose between my mother's empire and my own soul when the five-year mark arrived."
"And what did you choose, Zachary?" I asked, stepping closer to him until our eyes met in the quiet vault.

"I chose you the day I said 'I do' at the altar, Sienna," Zachary whispered, reaching into his pocket and placing his gold wedding band into my palm. "Every single transaction I routed into my personal account tonight was designed to trigger your father's trap and destroy my mother forever."
The wall clock above the vault entrance chimed with a hollow metallic ring: 10:15 PM. We had exactly one hour and forty-five minutes to reach the Dirksen Federal Courthouse in Chicago.
