Chapter 2 - The Shadow Behind the Gallery

The freezing wind whipped my face as I kicked the emergency door open and bolted into the dark, wet alley behind the diner. I didn't stop to look back, my boots splashing through icy puddles as I sprinted toward the dense treeline bordering the interstate.

Six years ago, on a rainy autumn evening in Chicago, I had stood before my father’s favorite impressionist painting at the Modern Art Gallery, weeping quietly into a silk handkerchief. A handsome stranger with sorrowful hazel eyes had approached, offering a warm cup of cider and quoting the exact poem my father had written on the back of the canvas.

That stranger had been Zachary Sterling. He had listened to me talk about my loneliness for four hours, remembering every detail, every favorite book, and every childhood insecurity I possessed.

Now, as I ran through the thorn bushes in the pitch-black woods, Arthur Cole’s encrypted files began auto-syncing with my smartwatch. The screen projected a classified private investigator’s dossier dated eight months before that fateful gallery encounter.

The file contained surveillance photos of me visiting my father’s grave, transcripts of my private therapy sessions, and a comprehensive psychological profile commissioned by Victoria Sterling. Attached to the bottom was a handwritten note in Victoria’s elegant cursive: Zachary, memorizing her father’s favorite sonnet will secure her trust within forty-eight hours.

Nausea surged in my throat, threatening to double me over as tears of pure rage burned my frozen cheeks. My entire romance, our lavish wedding at the cathedral, and every whispered promise in the dark had been scripted like a corporate commercial.

Behind me, the sound of snapping branches and heavy footsteps drew closer with terrifying speed. "Sienna, stop running, please!" Zachary yelled, his voice echoing off the pine trunks.

I reached the embankment of a service road, spinning around and pulling a compact tactical stun gun from my pocket. "Stay away from me, Zachary, or I swear to God I will drop you right here in the mud!"

Zachary emerged from the shadows of the pines, his coat drenched in rain, his chest heaving violently. He raised both hands in the air, his face pale and contorted with an agony that looked horrifyingly real.

"You don't understand what my mother did to your father's estate, Sienna," he gasped, taking a slow, cautious step forward. "If you cross state lines tonight without the original physical deed, you will lose everything by midnight."
