Chapter 6 - The Pedigree of Lies

At two o'clock in the morning, inside a luxurious penthouse overlooking downtown Richmond, Federal Appeals Judge Harrison Sterling was awakened by the persistent chiming of his private, encrypted landline. He tied his silk robe around his waist, annoyed by the disruption, and lifted the receiver with practiced aristocratic superiority.

"Harrison, they've taken Bradley!" Evelyn’s hysterical voice shrieked through the earpiece, background noise filled with the echoing clink of federal holding cell bars. "Military commandos stormed the house! They've detained us under armed guard at the Henrico County holding facility!"

Judge Sterling frowned, adjusting his gold-rimmed reading glasses as he sat behind his mahogany executive desk. "Calm down, Evelyn. Bradley is a prominent attorney; this is an egregious jurisdictional overreach. I will call the Richmond Chief of Police and have the arresting officers suspended by sunrise."

"You don't understand, Harrison!" Evelyn wailed, her voice cracking into pure terror. "It wasn't the police! Eleanor’s father... he isn't a mechanic! He's a Four-Star General in the Pentagon! He brought helicopters and armed soldiers into our living room!"

Judge Sterling let out a dry, dismissive scoff, waving his fountain pen in the empty air. "A general has no constitutional authority over civilian citizens on domestic soil. The Posse Comitatus Act protects Bradley completely. I will issue an immediate emergency writ of habeas corpus and crush this military officer’s career before noon."

Before the judge could complete the sentence, the heavy mahogany double doors of his private study were kicked open with thunderous force. Six special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, flanked by Criminal Investigation Division officers in formal dress blues, swept into the room with drawn sidearms.

"Harrison Sterling, step away from the desk and place your hands where we can see them!" announced Special Agent Vance, my father's nephew and the lead investigator for the Department of Justice. "We have a federal warrant signed by the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court for your immediate arrest."

"This is an outrage! I am a sitting federal judge!" Harrison bellowed, rising to his feet with his face flushing a deep, dangerous crimson. "You cannot enter my private residence without state congressional approval!"

"Your judicial immunity does not cover fifteen years of offshore money laundering, bribery, and complicity in interstate domestic racketeering," Agent Vance replied, tossing a thick dossier onto the blotter. "Your shell corporations in the Cayman Islands just had their assets frozen by the Department of the Treasury forty minutes ago."

As the cold steel handcuffs clicked tightly around the judge's wrists, his private phone line crackled once more with an automated message from the United States Marshals Service: ALL ASSETS SEIZED UNDER EXECUTIVE ORDER.
