Chapter 14 - The Iron Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes before returning to the courtroom, an unprecedented speed that signaled absolute, unanimous condemnation. Chief Judge Robert Thornton adjusted his glasses, looking down at the four defendants with stern, unyielding judicial gravity.
"Will the defendants please rise for sentencing," the bailiff announced, his voice echoing across the silent hall. Bradley struggled to stand, his knees buckling until two federal marshals physically held him upright by his arms.
"On the charges of attempted premeditated murder of a military officer and an unborn child, the court finds the defendant, Bradley Sterling, guilty on all counts," Judge Thornton read with resounding authority. "You are hereby sentenced to three consecutive terms of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served at the United States Penitentiary, Florence High."
Bradley let out a pathetic, choking sob, his body collapsing against the defense table as the reality of dying inside a concrete tomb washed over his shattered psyche.
"On the charges of conspiracy to commit murder, first-degree poisoning, and racketeering, the court finds Evelyn Sterling guilty on all counts," the judge continued, his eyes fixing upon the weeping matriarch. "You are sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, with an additional thirty years for the aggravated murder of Rachel Holloway."
Evelyn slumped into her chair, clutching her chest as her precious family name and social status were legally extinguished forever. Harrison Sterling received thirty-five years for federal corruption and judicial bribery, while Julian Sterling was sentenced to twenty-eight years for money laundering and obstruction of justice.
"Furthermore," Judge Thornton declared, striking his heavy wooden gavel against the sounding block, "under the Federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, all assets of the Sterling estate—totaling eighty-two million dollars—are hereby seized and transferred into the newly established Eleanor and Victoria Vance Foundation for Abused Women and Children."

BANG!
The final crack of the gavel sounded like the closing of an iron vault. The marshals dragged the four weeping felons through the side exit doors, their chains clanking against the polished marble floor as the gallery erupted into thunderous, standing applause. Justice had not merely been served; it had fallen like a tidal wave upon the house of lies.
