Chapter 12 - A Mother's Stand

Three days later, having regained my strength under the world-class medical care at Walter Reed, I walked down the sterile corridor of the Richmond Federal Detention Center. I wore my clean, pressed military dress uniform, the gold captain’s bars gleaming on my collar and my service ribbons pinned perfectly over my chest.
Behind the reinforced glass of Visiting Room Alpha, Evelyn Sterling was escorted inside by two armed federal marshals. Gone were the burgundy cashmere shawls, the gold jewelry, and the smug, patronizing smirks that had terrorized me for three agonizing years.
She sat heavily across the steel table, her gray hair unwashed, her face wrinkled and hollow without her expensive cosmetics, her orange prison smock hanging loosely over her sunken shoulders. When she looked up and saw me standing tall in full military regalia, her lips twitched with residual, bitter venom.
"You look quite pleased with yourself, you deceitful little wretch," Evelyn hissed through the intercom grill. "You think wearing a soldier's costume erases the fact that you were nothing more than a glorified maid in my home?"
I sat down calmly, placing my hands flat against the cold metal counter, my gaze piercing through the glass with absolute, unyielding dominance. "I am Captain Eleanor Vance, United States Army Medical Corps. I have saved soldiers under active mortar fire in combat zones, Evelyn. Your little kitchen was never a prison; it was merely a temporary endurance test."
Evelyn’s hands shook as she gripped the edges of the table, her knuckles white. "Bradley will be acquitted! Our attorneys will file appeals until your father's illegal military stunts are thrown out of every court in the Commonwealth!"
"There are no appeals, Evelyn," I said, my voice smooth, steady, and devastatingly clear. "Julian is currently in a maximum-security holding cell in Baltimore. Harrison has been stripped of his judgeship and faces forty years for federal racketeering. And Bradley... Bradley gave a full, recorded confession two days ago."
Evelyn froze, her eyes widening in horror as the final pillar of her delusion collapsed into dust. "Bradley... confessed?"
"He told them everything," I continued, leaning in closer. "He told them about Rachel Holloway. He told them about the thallium in my vitamins. And he told them that every single drop of poison was purchased with your private signature."

"He lied! My son would never betray me!" Evelyn screamed, slamming her cuffed wrists against the glass partition. "I built him! I gave him everything!"
"You built a monster, Evelyn," I said quietly, rising from the chair and looking down at her with pure, unadulterated closure. "And now, you will spend the rest of your natural life in a six-by-eight concrete cage, watching that monster rot in the cell right across from you."
