Chapter 1 - The Command Line

The speakerphone crackled with a sharp, rhythmic burst of military-grade encryption static that hissed against the expensive wallpaper of the dining room. Bradley adjusted his gold wristwatch, leaning over the quartz counter with a smug, self-satisfied grin curling his lip.

"Go ahead, old man, tell your daughter how you're going to fix her miserable life from your greasy garage," Bradley sneered into the fractured microphone. Evelyn chuckled from her leather chair, smoothing her cashmere shawl as she took a slow sip of her vintage Pinot Noir.

"Identify yourself and state your immediate authorization code," a voice answered, deep as grinding granite and colder than sub-zero steel. The background noise on the receiver was not the clatter of wrenches or the rumble of rusted pickup engines, but the sharp, synchronized murmur of air traffic controllers and the high-pitched whine of jet turbines.

Bradley blinked, his arrogant smile flickering for a fraction of a second before he puffed his chest out. "I am Bradley Sterling, senior partner at Sterling & Sterling Asset Management, and your daughter is currently bleeding on my kitchen floor because she forgot her place."

"Bradley Sterling," the voice repeated, devoid of human warmth, sounding like an execution order read in an underground bunker. "You are speaking to General Marcus Vance, Commander of United States Special Operations Command."

Evelyn snorted loudly, waving her manicured hand dismissively toward the ceiling. "Oh, please, Bradley, hang up on that delusional vagrant before he tries to sell us surplus tires."

"Track the GPS coordinates of this cellular device immediately," the General commanded someone off-line, his voice carrying the terrifying authority that moved aircraft carriers across oceans. "Alert Joint Base Andrews and dispatch the Quick Reaction Medical Evac Unit out of Fort Belvoir with full tactical escort."

"You think a fake military title scares me, old man?" Bradley barked, slamming his palm against the counter. "My godfather sits on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and my uncle chairs the state bar association!"

"Your godfather cannot stop an airborne strike package, Mr. Sterling," the voice responded with chilling calm. "And you have precisely seven minutes before my operators breach your perimeter."

A sudden, ear-splitting tone sounded over the phone line, followed by three automated electronic beeps that signaled a Department of Defense high-priority satellite lock. The screen flashed bright crimson with an alert banner that read: CLASSIFIED SECURE COMM: PENTAGON DIRECT OVERRIDE.

Bradley stared at the flashing red text, his face draining of color as the reality of the digital intercept paralyzed his throat. On the cold kitchen tiles, clutching my torn abdomen as blood soaked through my scrubs, I looked up through blurred vision and whispered, "He told you not to make him choose."
