Chapter 8 - MARGARET’S PHONE CALL PUT ME IN THE CAR

Margaret cried before she explained.

“I thought I was saving you.”

Of course.

The sentence of my life.

Dominic’s planned extraction required him to travel alone.

Morning of crash, I insisted on riding.

Margaret saw us leave estate.

She panicked.

Called Luciano.

Why?

She knew grandfather had influence over plan.

Thought he could cancel everything.

She said:

“Adrian is with him.”

Luciano replied:

“I know.”

Then hung up.

Margaret assumed he would stop operation.

Instead—

Dr. Weiss payment suggests he prepared for my injury.

Could he have stopped final saboteur?

Maybe.

He chose not.

Margaret carried guilt twenty-two years.

Why hide?

Because she believed her call indirectly put me at risk.

But she did not cause sabotage.

Still secret.

I felt numb.

Then Claire said:

“Everyone here keeps taking responsibility for decisions somebody else made.”

Silence.

She looked at me.

“Your grandfather made the choice.”

Yes.

Not sixteen-year-old me reaching for radio.

Not Margaret calling.

Not Dominic taking me.

Luciano ordered or allowed final lethal plan.

Responsibility belonged upward.

That released something inside me I had carried since sixteen.

Not healed.

But named.

Then Charles gave location of original LM trust instruction.

A bank vault under Richard Vale’s old legal foundation.

Federal authorities recovered.

Document handwritten by Luciano:

If Dominic proceeds against family interests, intervention authorized.

Then:

Protect Adrian at all cost.

Two instructions.

Kill son.

Protect grandson.

Horrifying.

Final operational recipient initials:

A.C.

Anthony Caruso?

My father’s lawyer.

No.

Maybe Antonio Costa, security chief.

Need identify.

Fingerprint old.

Signature decoding via payroll:

Arthur Cole.

Former Moretti security mechanic.

Dead six years.

He likely made final sabotage.

So Victor Raines was first hired, canceled.

Arthur performed lethal modification under Luciano.

That resolved mechanics.

Then Richard Vale covered.

Matteo carried guilt.

Charles disappeared.

Margaret hid report.

Anthony Caruso investigated.

Everyone orbiting Luciano’s decision.

Then what was Luca doing now?

He had spent eight years uncovering father’s guilt.

He feared telling me.

Now he testified all.

We could move toward justice though principals dead.

Financial crimes current.

Trust correction.

Restitution.

Claire and Owen.

Charles wanted see Claire in person.

She refused initially.

Then agreed with therapist? Maybe not therapy. She chose meeting in neutral place.

He arrived using wheelchair? no.

Frail.

She stood ten feet away.

“Why didn’t you come back after Matteo died?”

Charles cried.

“Because Vale’s people were still active.”

“After Luciano died?”

“I was sick.”

“After Mom died?”

“I was ashamed.”

There.

Finally not protection.

Shame.

Claire nodded.

“That I believe.”

They talked three hours.

No instant forgiveness.

He met Owen only after Claire allowed.

Held grandson.

Cried.

Then told her property truth.

Bennett riverfront interest.

Luciano forged release.

Current value:

$46 million.

Claire and Rebecca heirs.

Half each maybe.

Claire laughed.

“I clean houses for $19 an hour.”

The absurdity.

But stolen wealth does not instantly become hers until litigation.

Lawyers.

Trust.

Current Moretti holdings included land.

I could settle.

But conflict? I chose transparency.

Independent valuation.

Historic ownership reviewed.

Moretti company agreed transfer 50% economic value? Need plausible.

We negotiated court-supervised settlement.

Claire refused personal favors.

Good.

Her legal inheritance recognized independent of me.

She would never owe me.

That mattered.

Then I made another choice.

I removed Luca from operations temporarily during investigation.

Not punishment.

Conflict.

He understood.

Margaret resigned as estate manager.

I accepted.

She asked forgiveness.

I said:

“Not yet.”

Honest.

Tomas stayed after security audit.

Natalie/Rebecca faced charges for child interference and unauthorized system access; cooperation mitigated maybe.

Claire quit.

That surprised me.

“You don’t need money now?”

“I still do.”

Inheritance litigation not cash.

“Then why?”

She looked around mansion.

“Because this house is terrible.”

I laughed.

Actually laughed.

She smiled.

Then:

“And because you need someone who chooses to be here, not someone on payroll.”

That stopped me.

She left.

Moved with Owen to safer apartment paid from her own legal emergency fund? Charles had some protected funds perhaps. She refused Moretti money.

We stayed in contact.

Not romantic immediately.

I had enough issues.

She had too.

Then physical rehab.

Claire had once asked:

“Have you ever tried again?”

Walking?

I snapped at her.

Now after fever and truth, I consulted specialists.

Old spinal injury permanent? Maybe incomplete? Don't magically cure. Doctors said no realistic walking recovery, but strength and health could improve.

I started therapy for pain, conditioning.

Not to walk.

To live.

That distinction mattered.

Then Charles died six months later.

Cancer.

Claire was with him.

He left second document.

To me.

Dominic had sent Charles letter night before crash.

If I disappear, Adrian must never inherit the organization as it exists now.

My chest tightened.

Why?

Dad wanted legitimate businesses separated from criminal operations.

He hoped testimony would dismantle old network and leave me clean assets.

Instead Luciano preserved empire and raised me inside it.

I became exactly what Dad hoped I would not.

Power.

Fear.

Silence.

Then final line:

If Adrian grows into his grandfather, Charles, stop him.

I stared.

Claire’s father had been given authority to stop me.

How?

A voting agreement.

Dominic secretly placed 30% of legitimate Moretti holdings under Bennett-controlled proxy if Adrian engaged in certain criminal conduct.

Charles never used.

Could Claire inherit that proxy?

Potentially.

My housekeeper might hold voting power over my legal companies.

I laughed at the irony.

Claire did not.

“This isn’t funny.”

“It’s a little funny.”

Then legal review found proxy valid for only specific holding company worth hundreds million.

Claire could activate governance review.

Would she?

Not yet.

She said:

“If I ever have to use it, you’ve already made a bad choice.”

Fair.

Then one night Tomas called.

Someone entered old Moretti archive at warehouse.

Stole one box.

Camera face clear.

Dr. Harold Weiss.

My surgeon.

The man paid before crash.

He was eighty-two.

Still alive.

Why steal files?

Police found him at airport.

Box recovered.

Inside:

Medical records.

Mine.

And another patient.

Name:

Dominic Moretti.

Date:

Two days after my father supposedly died.

I stopped breathing.

My father had medical records after the crash.

Could he have survived initial accident?

Maybe he died later?

Official death date crash day.

Then hospital record showed:

MALE, APPROX. 42, SPINAL/HEAD TRAUMA, ADMITTED UNDER ALIAS D. MORRIS.

Fingerprint? Not yet.

Dr. Weiss finally said:

“Dominic survived.”

The room went silent.

“For how long?”

Weiss looked at me.

May you like

“Three days.”

My father had been alive while everyone told me he died at scene.
