Chapter 7 - SOMEONE TOOK OWEN WITHOUT LEAVING THE HOUSE

Claire screamed his name.
I had never heard fear like that.
Every guard moved.
Doors locked.
Grounds sealed.
No vehicle had exited.
No camera showed anyone carrying Owen outside.
Which meant he was still inside.
Twenty-four rooms.
Service corridors.
Old mansion.
I hated every inch of it.
Claire ran.
I followed as fast as wheelchair allowed.
For first time in years, I hated my legs not because they were paralyzed—
but because someone had Claire’s child and I could not move quickly enough.
Tomas checked nursery camera.
At 3:12 p.m., feed froze for forty-seven seconds.
Then Owen gone.
Access logs:
Margaret credential.
Again.
Fake.
Who had system knowledge?
Luca.
Tomas.
Margaret.
Elena.
Security IT.
Then Claire stopped.
“The laundry.”
“What?”
“Owen likes machines.”
Not relevant?
She shook head.
“He follows sound.”
Service laundry room had industrial dryer hum.
If someone carried him awake, he might cry unless distracted by familiar noise.
We checked.
No Owen.
Then Claire noticed small blue blanket on floor near dumbwaiter corridor.
Old service lift.
Not used.
Door cracked.
We opened.
Inside shaft platform lower level.
Tomas descended.
Found Owen in basement pantry.
Alive.
Sitting in storage basket.
Crying.
No injuries.
Beside him:
Laptop.
LM Continuity Trust open.
Someone had used Claire’s room to access account, then placed Owen near evidence.
Frame.
If discovered later, could suggest Claire stole trust money and staged disappearance?
Maybe.
Then a typed note:
CLAIRE TOOK WHAT HER FATHER WAS OWED.
Exactly.
They were building a story.
Who?
Someone wanted Claire removed.
Maybe from me.
Maybe from truth.
Then laptop fingerprints.
Claire’s? She had touched similar? Need not rely. Device had been wiped.
Security footage hidden service corridor.
Figure wearing housekeeping uniform.
Face obscured.
Height woman.
Could be Margaret.
Could be Claire.
Could be another employee.
Then we counted staff.
One missing:
Natalie Price.
Night housekeeper.
Worked two years.
No one could locate.
Her employment file?
Fake address.
Fake Social Security number.
Photo:
Natalie looked familiar.
Claire stared.
“She came to my apartment once.”
When?
Before hiring.
Said she was from housekeeping agency, recommended Moretti job.
So Claire being hired was not random.
Natalie steered her here.
Who sent Natalie?
Phone records:
Luca? no.
A number tied to Charles Bennett.
Claire’s father.
My stomach dropped.
If Charles sent someone to place Claire in mansion, why?
To uncover documents?
Protect me?
Expose truth?
Then Natalie’s real identity:
Rebecca Bennett.
Claire’s older half sister.
What?
Charles had another daughter before Claire.
Age forty-one.
Mother different.
Claire had never known.
Rebecca worked under false identity inside my house for two years.
So Charles planted one daughter as housekeeper? Claire came recently, but Rebecca positioned before.
Maybe Rebecca engineered Claire’s hiring when time came.
Then where was she?
Security found car gone earlier under food delivery exit.
She may have taken no Owen. She left before disappearance.
Could still orchestrate remotely.
Then text arrived to Claire.
Unknown:
OWEN WAS NEVER IN DANGER.
She shook.
Then:
I NEEDED ADRIAN TO OPEN THE LM TRUST.
Signed:
R.
Rebecca.
Why?
Once Adrian investigated $4m transfer, restitution clause exposed.
Charles wanted proof Luciano ordered crash.
Trust documents showed contingency.
Rebecca used Owen as trigger to force attention.
Unacceptable.
Claire wrote:
YOU TOOK MY CHILD?
Reply:
I MOVED HIM FOR SIX MINUTES. HE WAS SAFE.
Claire threw phone.
“She is insane.”
I agreed.
Protection through trauma.
Again.
Then Rebecca asked meeting.
Police involved.
She surrendered.
Claire refused hug.
Good.
Rebecca explained.
Charles alive.
She had been working with him.
Where?
He lived in Michigan under new name.
Why not come?
Cancer.
Very sick.
He believed time running out.
He wanted truth released before death.
Why use Claire unknowingly?
Because he did not trust Moretti.
He trusted Adrian? Maybe not.
He wanted Claire to independently discover.
Rebecca arranged job after Adrian dismissed previous housekeepers. She believed Claire’s bluntness might survive.
That was bizarrely accurate.
Then I asked:
“Did you cause my fever?”
No.
I had viral infection.
Claire staying overnight was coincidence.
A human one.
Good.
Not everything engineered.
Then Rebecca said:
“Finding crash file was not supposed to happen that day.”
Margaret planted separately.
Two plans collided.
Then Owen incident was Rebecca’s desperate move after trust access.
No excuse.
Police considered charges.
Claire supported whatever law decided.
Family did not erase consequences.
Then Charles.
He agreed video call.
Claire stared at screen.
Old man.
Thin.
Her eyes.
He cried instantly.
“My baby.”
Claire’s face hardened.
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
“Where were you?”
He explained.
Witness protection initially informal? Federal protected identity after Vale corruption discovered. Then program? Better: he cooperated with federal authorities and entered protected relocation after credible threats. But why couldn't contact family? Official witness security could restrict. Yet he met Marianne twice secretly, violating.
He knew Luciano ordered fatal modification through LM payments.
Could not prove recipient.
He spent years trying.
Then Matteo died.
Luciano died.
Thought danger reduced.
But Vale network still.
Richard Vale had been corrupt too? We need clarify.
Charles said Richard Vale initially wanted controlled extraction, but later sold information to Luciano.
He betrayed Dominic.
Thus staged plan leaked.
Luciano turned it into murder.
Vale then helped cover.
That fits.
Then why protect Charles? Federal colleagues discovered Vale corruption and moved Charles.
Then Charles said:
“Adrian, your father was not supposed to die.”
I stared.
“He agreed to disappear.”
What?
Dominic had accepted extraction plan.
He was going to fake a roadside breakdown, leave with federal team, testify.
He planned to abandon me?
No.
Charles shook head.
“He planned to send for you after.”
But he took me in car that morning.
Why?
Last-minute change.
I begged to ride.
He allowed.
That disrupted plan.
Luciano learned I was in vehicle.
He ordered Dr. Weiss ready.
Then still allowed sabotage.
He chose chance of grandson injury over son survival.
I felt sick.
Then Charles whispered:
“The person who told Luciano you were in the car was Margaret.”
Everyone looked at her.
May you like
She stopped breathing.
Another betrayal.
