Chapter 4 - THE MAN AT THE GATE WAS NOT CLAIRE’S FATHER

Claire wanted to run outside.

I stopped her.

“No.”

She turned on me.

“That could be my father.”

“That could be someone using his name.”

Her face tightened.

She hated that I was right.

Tomas went to gate with police liaison.

The man was sixty-four.

Gray hair.

Thin.

Scar on chin.

Claire watched camera.

Tears filled her eyes.

“That’s not him.”

“You remember?”

“I remember pictures.”

This man looked nothing like Charles Bennett.

Then who?

He smiled at camera.

“I’m here to speak with Adrian Moretti.”

“About?”

“Charles Bennett.”

We brought him to security room, not main house.

Name:

Samuel Creed.

Former private investigator.

Worked for Matteo Moretti twenty years earlier.

Why use Charles’s name?

“To make sure you opened gate.”

I almost admired audacity.

Then Samuel looked at Claire.

“You have Marianne’s eyes.”

Her face hardened.

“You knew my mother?”

“Yes.”

“Where is my father?”

Samuel paused.

“Alive last time I saw him.”

Claire stopped breathing.

“When?”

“Eighteen years ago.”

So six years after supposed death.

“Where?”

“Detroit.”

Why was Samuel there?

Matteo hired him to find Charles.

He succeeded.

But did not report.

Why?

Charles had evidence that could send Matteo away.

He offered Samuel money?

No.

He offered truth.

Samuel had believed Dominic died accidentally.

Charles showed crash photographs.

Proof Matteo likely involved.

Samuel switched sides.

Helped Charles disappear again.

Then what?

Charles said he could not return to Claire because Matteo watched family.

“He sent money?”

Samuel looked down.

“He tried.”

Transfers intercepted.

Risk fund.

Insurance scheme.

Matteo controlled Marianne through threats.

So Claire’s mother may have known Charles alive.

Did she?

Samuel nodded.

“She met him twice.”

Claire’s face shattered.

Her mother died five years ago.

Never told.

“I asked her if Dad was alive.”

“She was protecting you.”

Claire laughed.

There it was again.

Everyone’s favorite excuse.

Then Samuel said something unexpected.

“Charles didn’t disappear only because of Matteo.”

“Who else?”

“Dominic.”

My father?

No.

Dominic died first.

“What did he do?”

“Nothing intentional.”

Charles discovered Dominic had created a private trust.

Beneficiary:

Adrian Moretti.

Normal.

But asset inside trust included disputed land jointly owned with Bennett family.

Claire frowned.

“What Bennett family?”

Her grandfather.

Charles’s father, Henry Bennett, had been business partner with Moretti before Dominic.

Another hidden connection.

They owned industrial riverfront property together.

Worth little then.

Worth tens of millions now.

Charles had rights through inheritance.

Claire potentially too.

Did Matteo want land?

Yes.

After Dominic died, Matteo transferred property into Moretti holding company using forged Bennett release.

Charles discovered.

That became another reason he ran.

This story was not only crime evidence.

Property theft.

Then why return now?

Samuel said Charles sent him three weeks ago.

From where?

“No.”

He refused.

“He’ll contact Claire when safe.”

Claire snapped:

“Safe according to who?”

Samuel looked ashamed.

“According to him.”

She stood.

“No.”

Everyone looked.

“If he wants to speak to me, he comes himself.”

Good.

Then Samuel gave envelope.

From Charles.

Claire opened.

One sentence:

CLAIRE, I AM SORRY YOU PAID FOR A WAR YOU NEVER STARTED.

She cried silently.

Then:

DO NOT TRUST MARGARET SLOAN.

I looked at Margaret.

She went white.

Claire read aloud.

“MARGARET DID NOT ONLY HIDE DOMINIC’S CRASH REPORT. SHE CHANGED IT.”

The room froze.

Margaret whispered:

“No.”

Samuel said nothing.

Claire continued.

“THE ORIGINAL REPORT NAMED A DIFFERENT SUSPECT.”

I looked at Margaret.

“What did you change?”

“Adrian—”

“Answer.”

She began shaking.

“The report originally said tampering was performed with a tool kit recovered from Charles Bennett’s vehicle.”

Claire stopped.

Her father was implicated.

Why remove?

Margaret claimed she believed evidence planted.

Dominic trusted Charles.

Matteo wanted him blamed.

So she deleted that detail from preserved copy.

Maybe to protect truth.

Maybe to manipulate.

Then original police file?

Missing.

Samuel had photograph.

Tool kit.

Fingerprints? Charles’s and mechanic’s? Tools belonged to him maybe.

Why in vehicle?

Charles sometimes helped garage records? Unclear.

Then Samuel said:

“Charles was at the garage the night before crash.”

Claire stared.

“Why?”

“To meet Dominic.”

Did he touch car?

Unknown.

Then more.

Dominic’s car left garage at 9:12.

Charles left 9:20.

Matteo arrived 10:03.

Crash next morning.

Either could access later? Matteo had time.

Then Samuel said:

“Your father believes Margaret altered timeline too.”

Margaret exploded.

“I SAVED ADRIAN!”

The room went silent.

What?

She covered mouth.

Too late.

“How?”

She had known something was wrong before crash.

Dominic called morning.

Said steering felt strange.

Margaret begged him not to drive.

He said mechanic checked.

Then Dominic chose to take Adrian because he needed private conversation? My father and me in car.

Margaret secretly called highway patrol contact to watch route.

Too late.

After crash, she got me airlifted quickly? Not exactly saved from crash, but ensured rescue.

Then why say saved?

Because someone planned second attack at hospital.

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

Matteo wanted me moved to Moretti private clinic.

Margaret refused.

Kept me at Northwestern.

Why would he want private clinic?

Could control recovery.

Maybe silence me if I remembered?

I remembered nothing useful.

Then Margaret said:

“Matteo told me, ‘If boy remembers Charles near the car, family ends tonight.’”

So Matteo feared I might implicate Charles?

Or wanted.

Margaret kept me away.

Then Claire looked at Samuel.

“What does my father believe happened?”

Samuel answered:

“Charles believes Matteo ordered tampering.”

Expected.

Then:

“But he believes someone else actually did it.”

“Who?”

Samuel looked directly at Margaret.

“Victor Raines.”

The head mechanic.

Where was Victor now?

Alive.

Retired.

Living in Arizona.

Then Tomas searched quickly.

Victor Raines had returned to Chicago yesterday.

Hotel downtown.

Why now?

Because someone called him.

Who?

Luca Moretti.

My cousin.

The man possibly caught entering archive.

May you like

The same man who had hung up on me.

And suddenly the next generation was touching the same secret.
