Chapter 6 - MY LAWYER KNEW ABOUT THE CRASH BEFORE I DID

Elena did not deny her father had been at the garage.

She sat across from me.

Perfect posture.

No fear.

“My father represented Dominic.”

“Then why was he at the garage after midnight?”

“Because Dominic called him.”

When?

Night before crash.

Dominic told Anthony Caruso something was wrong.

He suspected someone planned staged accident.

Not murder.

A fake mechanical incident designed to force him out of public view.

Richard Vale had proposed it.

Why?

Vale said federal protection was compromised.

Dominic needed to disappear immediately.

A controlled roadside breakdown would allow agents to extract him discreetly.

This sounded insane.

Elena agreed.

“Federal operations were different then.”

Still.

Then Anthony went to verify.

He found steering system tampered beyond what controlled plan required.

He realized someone had converted fake incident into lethal one.

He tried calling Dominic.

Could not reach.

Why not police?

Because Vale was prosecutor coordinating.

Anthony called Vale.

Vale said issue handled.

It wasn’t.

Next morning crash.

Dominic died.

I became paralyzed.

Who altered from controlled to lethal?

Anthony spent years investigating.

He found money from Matteo to Victor.

Money from Vale to Charles.

Then second unexplained payment from offshore account to unknown mechanic.

Amount:

$200,000.

Who controlled account?

M.S. Holdings.

Margaret Sloan?

She went white.

No.

Her initials.

But M.S. stood for—

Moretti Security Holdings.

Controlled jointly by Dominic and Matteo then.

Could be either.

Then signer:

L. Moretti.

L?

No Luca, child.

Luciano Moretti.

My grandfather.

Dead before? Wait maybe alive then. Let's introduce grandfather. He could have been patriarch and died 10 years ago. But Adrian likely inherited organization from father. Could be grandfather alive then. Fine.

Luciano Moretti, Dominic and Matteo’s father.

My grandfather.

I had worshipped him.

He raised me after crash.

Paid for rehabilitation.

Taught me never to pity myself.

Died when I was twenty-eight.

Was he involved?

Elena said Anthony believed Luciano ordered final sabotage.

Why?

To stop Dominic from cooperating with federal authorities.

If Dominic disappeared into witness protection, Moretti organization could collapse.

Luciano chose empire over son.

My chest went cold.

Did Matteo know?

Maybe not.

He spent life believing his own attempted scheme caused death.

Luciano allowed guilt.

Another layer.

Then why Charles?

He worked with Vale on staged extraction.

Not murder.

So Claire’s father may have been trying to save Dominic.

That changed everything.

Claire started crying quietly.

Relief?

Maybe anger too.

Then Elena said:

“But Anthony never proved it.”

What happened to Luciano records?

Destroyed after death.

Except one trust.

Name:

LM Continuity Trust.

Still active.

Who trustee?

Luca.

My cousin.

He looked shocked.

“My father put me in.”

But trust created by Luciano.

Assets:

Old security companies.

Warehouses.

And one $200,000 disbursement twenty-two years ago matching sabotage payment.

Beneficiary recipient hidden by code.

Tomas traced code through bank archive.

Recipient:

Dr. Harold Weiss.

Not mechanic.

Neurosurgeon.

The doctor who operated on me after crash.

My stomach dropped.

Why did grandfather pay my surgeon $200,000 before accident?

Date:

Three days before.

Impossible as medical payment after.

Unless surgery anticipated.

This was no longer only car sabotage.

Someone planned for me to survive?

Or planned medical handling.

Then hospital records.

Dr. Weiss directed transfer to specific surgical unit.

He saved my life and stabilized spinal injury.

Was payment retainer to ensure care after staged crash?

Maybe.

If plan was controlled accident, they knew Adrian might be in car?

But Dad may not plan take me? Yet he did.

Could grandfather have known.

Then another payment after crash:

$500,000.

From LM Trust.

To Weiss foundation.

Maybe gratitude.

But prepayment suspicious.

Then Claire said:

“Your grandfather knew there would be an accident.”

Exactly.

If controlled extraction plan only involved Dominic, why arrange surgeon for Adrian?

Maybe Luciano knew Adrian would ride with him and wanted grandson protected while son eliminated.

Monstrous.

Then Luca looked sick.

“Our grandfather?”

I remembered hospital.

Luciano beside bed.

Holding my hand.

“You’re a Moretti. You survive.”

I had worshipped him for being there.

Maybe he had created reason I needed survival.

Then Elena gave final Anthony Caruso memo.

One sentence:

LUCIANO WILL SACRIFICE DOMINIC, BUT NOT THE BOY.

I could barely breathe.

Claire touched my hand.

Not because I needed comfort?

I did.

I let her.

Then Tomas’s security alert sounded.

Someone accessed LM Continuity Trust online.

Current.

Transfer attempt:

$4 million.

Destination:

BENNETT FAMILY HOLDINGS.

Claire froze.

“What?”

A company in her surname.

Beneficiary:

Owen Bennett.

Her eighteen-month-old son.

The room stopped.

Why was an old Moretti trust sending four million dollars to Claire’s baby?

Then Elena whispered:

“Because Luciano’s trust had a restitution clause.”

For whom?

If Dominic died due to family action, certain assets were to be transferred secretly to Charles Bennett’s descendants for his role in attempted rescue.

Charles never claimed.

Claire now descendant.

Owen next.

So my grandfather had planned murder—

and compensation.

Claire looked at me with horror.

“My son is not taking blood money.”

I understood immediately.

Neither would I.

Then transaction source user:

CSLOAN.

Margaret Sloan.

Everyone turned.

She went pale.

“I didn’t authorize that.”

Another stolen credential.

Who?

Security trace:

Device inside mansion.

Guest wing.

Claire’s room.

She looked at me.

“No.”

Owen was asleep there.

We moved.

Fast.

Tomas entered room first.

May you like

Empty except crib.

Owen gone.
