Chapter 3 - MY FATHER HAD LEFT INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT CLAIRE

Claire stood so quickly Owen startled.
“Why would your father know me?”
I had no answer.
Margaret did.
“Charles Bennett worked for Dominic.”
Claire stared at her.
“For how long?”
“Six years.”
“My mother told me he worked for a manufacturing company.”
“He did.”
Margaret looked at me.
“One of ours.”
Claire’s entire childhood shifted in front of me.
Her father, Charles Bennett, had been senior controller for Moretti Industrial Supply.
Clean books.
Quiet man.
No criminal record.
Dominic trusted him.
Then Charles discovered unusual transfers from security contracts.
Money leaving family companies and entering businesses controlled by Matteo.
He reported to Dominic.
That put him in danger.
Then after Dominic died, Charles vanished from Chicago records.
Claire’s mother told her he died from a workplace accident three years later.
No funeral?
Small memorial.
Closed urn.
No body.
Claire whispered:
“I was twelve. Mom said there wasn’t much left after the accident.”
My stomach tightened.
Another story built around missing remains.
Maybe he died.
Maybe not.
Then Dad’s tape continued.
“If Charles Bennett is telling the truth, someone inside the family is using my companies to finance something much larger than Matteo understands.”
Then:
“Charles says there is a second ledger.”
Always ledgers.
But this one apparently tracked offshore transfers.
Dominic planned to confront Matteo.
Never got chance.
Then:
“If Charles disappears, his daughter Claire may be the only reason he resurfaces.”
What did that mean?
A child as leverage?
Again.
Claire looked furious.
“I was five.”
“Yes.”
“He planned around me?”
“My father planned around everyone.”
That did not make it right.
Then the cassette ended with one name:
Sloan.
Margaret.
He trusted her to preserve.
She failed for twenty-two years.
But maybe staying alive preserved evidence.
Then safety box contained photograph.
Charles Bennett.
Dominic Moretti.
Margaret.
Victor Raines.
And a fifth man.
I knew him.
Richard Vale.
Former Chicago prosecutor.
Later federal judge.
Dead ten years.
Powerful.
Respected.
Why was he meeting with my father privately?
Back of photo:
JAN 9 - BENNETT HAS PROOF.
Five days before crash.
Then another document:
Federal cooperation draft.
Dominic had been preparing to provide evidence against his own brother and associates.
My father was going to cooperate with federal authorities.
That could destroy Moretti network.
Maybe someone killed him to stop it.
Then Claire said:
“What happened to Charles?”
Margaret looked at her.
“After crash, your father panicked.”
He took copies.
Left.
Matteo searched.
Couldn’t find.
Then Charles contacted Margaret once.
Three years later.
Same week Claire was told he died.
He said:
“I’m ending this before they reach my family.”
Then nothing.
Maybe he staged death and disappeared.
Claire looked sick.
“He abandoned us?”
“Maybe to protect you.”
She laughed bitterly.
“I was raised by a mother working two jobs. I dropped out of college when she got sick. Owen’s father disappeared before he was born.”
She looked around marble mansion.
“Protection is expensive when someone else pays the bill.”
The sentence hit me.
I had spent twenty-two years believing secrecy was what powerful families did to keep each other alive.
Claire made it sound like what it was.
A debt transferred to the uninformed.
Then Tomas investigated Charles’s death.
Certificate:
Industrial explosion in Indiana.
Employer:
Bennett Logistics Consultants.
Next of kin:
Marianne Bennett.
Claire’s mother.
Body identified through personal effects.
No DNA record.
Then payout.
Life insurance:
$750,000.
Where did money go?
Claire frowned.
“My mother never had seven hundred fifty thousand dollars.”
Bank trace:
Insurance paid.
Then transferred within forty-eight hours to—
Moretti Family Risk Fund.
My stomach dropped.
Why would Claire’s mother send life insurance to my family?
Signature authorization:
Marianne Bennett.
Could be coerced.
Forged.
Or payment for protection.
Then another transfer:
$50,000 to Marianne.
Maybe she received only portion.
I looked at Margaret.
“Who controlled risk fund?”
She closed eyes.
“Matteo.”
Of course.
So after Charles’s supposed death, my uncle took most insurance payout.
That looked like financial control.
Maybe staged death funded by Moretti.
Then Tomas found old police intelligence.
Charles Bennett had been an informant under code:
CB-17.
Handler:
Richard Vale.
The judge from photo, then prosecutor.
Charles was cooperating.
Then vanished.
Federal file sealed.
Could be witness protection.
Claire whispered:
“My father could be alive.”
Maybe.
Then she covered her mouth.
Not hope.
Anger.
Because if alive, twenty-five years? He left.
Then Owen began crying in next room.
Claire immediately went.
Mother first.
Even while her own father rose from dead paper.
I watched her pick up son.
Whisper.
Rock him.
And I realized something else.
If Charles was alive and someone now knew Claire worked for me—
they might believe she could lead them to him.
Then Tomas’s phone buzzed.
A security alert.
Front gate.
Man requesting entry.
No appointment.
No ID initially.
Then he gave name.
Charles Bennett.
Claire froze.
My entire body went cold.
May you like
The man we had spent two hours deciding might still be alive—
was standing outside my gate.
