Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO TRIED TO SAVE CLAIRE

Vanessa Whitmore had been standing outside the police station the day Claire tried to report Daniel.

I wanted to believe she was part of the conspiracy.

But the next piece of evidence changed everything.

A security recording from the building showed Claire and Vanessa arguing beside the entrance.

At first, Vanessa appeared to be blocking Claire's path.

Then she pressed something into Claire's hand.

A small black flash drive.

Claire slipped it into her coat.

Vanessa looked over her shoulder.

Then hurried away.

Rachel replayed the footage.

"She wasn't trying to stop Claire."

I stared at the screen.

"She was helping her."

"But Vanessa signed Noah's transfer documents."

"I know."

The contradiction made my head ache.

That evening, Vanessa contacted Rachel directly.

She wanted to speak.

Daniel wasn't with her.

She claimed he had become suspicious and was monitoring her movements.

Rachel arranged a meeting at a law office with investigators present.

When Vanessa entered, she looked nothing like the polished woman I'd seen at charity galas.

Her face was pale.

Her hands trembled.

And beneath her expensive coat, she wore a simple hospital bracelet.

I stared.

"Are you sick?"

She looked away.

"That's not why I'm here."

She sat.

Then placed a sealed folder on the table.

"Daniel told me Noah had been abandoned."

My jaw tightened.

"He lied."

"I know that now."

She swallowed.

"I helped arrange the transfer because I believed Claire had agreed to an adoption. Daniel showed me signed documents."

"Forged documents."

Vanessa nodded.

"When Claire confronted me, I realized something was wrong."

I stared at her.

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Daniel threatened to destroy my family."

Her voice broke.

"I was afraid."

I wanted to hate her.

Part of me still did.

But I also knew cowardice when I saw it.

I'd lived with it for five years.

"What happened before Claire's accident?" I asked.

Vanessa began crying.

"She found the financial records."

"And?"

"She was going to expose Daniel."

I leaned forward.

"Did he kill her?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Then what do you know?"

She opened the folder.

Inside were copies of insurance documents.

Vehicle maintenance records.

And a photograph of Claire's car.

Vanessa pointed to a handwritten note.

"Claire told me someone had been following her."

My heart pounded.

"Who?"

"Daniel's security contractor."

Rachel immediately photographed the evidence for investigators.

Then Vanessa looked at me.

"Michael, there's something I need to tell you about the Harrington family."

I went still.

"My son?"

She nodded.

"They didn't know Noah was taken from Claire."

I exhaled shakily.

"Thank God."

"But Daniel did."

I stared at her.

She began crying harder.

"He arranged the adoption through a private intermediary. The Harringtons believed they were helping a child whose mother couldn't care for him."

I lowered my head.

My son had been loved.

But he'd been stolen from Claire.

And from Emma.

Vanessa reached into her handbag.

Then placed a small envelope on the table.

"This came from Allison Harrington."

My heart stopped.

"Why would she give you something for me?"

Vanessa whispered:

"Because she found out about Claire."

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Noah standing beside a birthday cake shaped like a dinosaur.

And a note written in careful handwriting.

Mr. Rivers, if Noah is your son, you deserve to know him.

But please understand something.

He's already started asking why he looks like the man on television.

I stared at the words.

Then Vanessa added:

"Allison wants to meet you."

May you like

A pause.

"And she says Noah has been dreaming about a little girl named Emma."
