Chapter 11 - THE UNCLE WHO SOLD MY FAMILY

Charles Rivers had been the closest thing I had to a father.

When my parents died in a highway accident, he took me into his home.

He paid for my education.

Helped me establish my first investment company.

And stood beside me when I became wealthy.

I'd trusted him completely.

Now Claire's letter suggested he'd helped separate my children.

I stared at his photograph on the office wall.

The man who taught me how to negotiate.

How to invest.

How to build wealth.

Had he also taught me how to abandon responsibility?

I called Rachel.

"We need to investigate Charles."

She was silent for a moment.

"Michael, are you sure?"

"No."

I swallowed.

"But Claire was."

The next day, investigators reviewed the financial records connected to the adoption intermediary.

Several payments had originated from a private trust administered by Charles.

The account had been created five years earlier.

Shortly after Emma and Noah were born.

Rachel looked at me.

"Michael, Charles authorized the transfers."

I covered my face.

"Why?"

"We're still determining that."

Then she opened another file.

A shareholder agreement.

Charles and Daniel had quietly acquired enough voting power to influence major decisions at Rivers Capital.

They'd been planning to remove me as chief executive.

My stomach turned.

"All this time..."

Rachel nodded.

"They were building control behind your back."

I looked at the documents.

Charles had always encouraged me to focus on expansion.

Travel.

International investments.

Acquisitions.

He told me family responsibilities would distract me from success.

Whenever I mentioned Claire, he reminded me that wealthy men were targets for manipulation.

He'd turned my fear into an advantage.

Then Daniel made sure I never saw Claire's messages.

And Charles helped bury the truth.

It was a perfect arrangement.

As long as I remained successful.

And alone.

That afternoon, Charles called.

"Michael, I hear you've been making accusations."

I held the phone tightly.

"I've been asking questions."

"About things you don't understand."

I closed my eyes.

"Did you know Claire was pregnant with twins?"

Silence.

Then he sighed.

"That girl was trouble."

My chest tightened.

"Answer me."

"Michael, everything I did was for your future."

I felt sick.

"My children were my future."

Charles laughed bitterly.

"Children are expensive distractions. You were meant to build something extraordinary."

I stared at the wall.

For five years, I'd repeated the same excuses.

I didn't have time.

I wasn't ready.

I needed to focus on success.

Now I was hearing them from the man who taught me to run.

"Did you help Daniel take Noah?"

Charles didn't answer.

I waited.

Then he said something that made my blood freeze.

"You should be grateful I left the girl alone."

I couldn't breathe.

"The girl?"

"Emma."

My hands trembled.

Charles continued.

"Daniel wanted both children removed from Claire's care. I told him one was enough."

I closed my eyes.

My uncle had known.

All along.

Then Charles added:

"Don't make this public, Michael. You'll destroy everything we've built."

I looked toward the photograph of Emma on my desk.

Then Noah.

And I finally understood something.

The empire I'd spent years building wasn't worth more than my children.

Not even close.

"Charles," I said quietly, "you've already destroyed enough."

I ended the call.

But before Rachel could contact the investigators, a new message arrived.

From Daniel.

A photograph of Emma leaving Sunrise.

Taken that morning.

Beneath it was one sentence.

Stop investigating, or your daughter disappears next.
