Chapter 7 - THE PARTNER WHO BUILT MY EMPIRE ON LIES

I had given Daniel Whitmore access to everything.

Company accounts.

Private investments.

Business negotiations.

Even my personal phone when I was traveling.

Now I wondered how many times he'd stood between Claire and me.

How many messages he'd deleted.

How many calls he'd intercepted.

How many opportunities he'd stolen from a woman who'd been desperately trying to protect our children.

Rachel arranged a forensic review of old corporate records.

It took two days to recover fragments of archived communications.

But what we found was devastating.

Claire had emailed me fourteen times during her pregnancy.

I'd received none of them.

She'd sent photographs of ultrasound appointments.

A recording of Emma's heartbeat.

A message asking whether I'd come to Chicago when she went into labor.

All fourteen emails had been automatically redirected into an account controlled by Daniel.

I stared at the recovered messages.

One subject line read:

Michael, please. Just tell me you're alive.

I couldn't breathe.

Claire had believed Daniel's story about the plane crash.

Another message read:

I'm scared. The babies are coming early.

I covered my face.

Then Rachel opened the final recovered email.

Sent two hours after the delivery.

Michael, our daughter is beautiful. Her name is Emma.

They say Noah didn't survive, but something isn't right.

If you can hear me, please help us.

I began crying.

For years, I'd told myself Claire never contacted me.

Now I knew she had.

Again and again.

And Daniel had made sure I never heard her.

But Rachel wasn't finished.

The forensic review uncovered a separate group of financial transactions.

Millions had moved from Rivers Capital into companies Daniel secretly controlled.

Some payments were disguised as management fees.

Others were falsely recorded as charitable grants.

One account received exactly three million dollars over five years.

I stared at the figure.

Three million.

The same amount I'd donated to Sunrise.

Rachel looked at me.

"Michael, there's something strange about that donation."

"What?"

"The recipient account was changed shortly before today's announcement."

I frowned.

"Changed by whom?"

"Daniel."

My blood ran cold.

I'd approved the donation believing it would help children.

But Daniel had substituted an account connected to his own foundation.

The money would never have reached Sunrise.

Unless someone caught it.

Rachel had.

And she'd frozen the transfer before it was completed.

I looked toward the window.

Daniel had stolen from my company.

From Claire.

From my children.

And now he was trying to steal from an orphanage.

I stood.

"I'm removing him."

Rachel shook her head.

"Not before investigators preserve the evidence and the board follows proper procedures."

I forced myself to sit.

For the first time, I understood that doing the right thing sometimes meant surrendering control.

That afternoon, the authorities obtained new financial records.

But one transaction stood out.

A payment to a private investigator in Chicago.

Dated three weeks before Claire's accident.

The description contained three words.

Bennett surveillance termination.

Rachel looked at me.

Her expression darkened.

"Michael, I think Daniel knew Claire was about to expose him."

Then she opened an attached photograph.

Claire stood outside a police station.

May you like

Holding a thick folder.

And behind her, reflected in the window of a black SUV, was Vanessa Whitmore.
