Chapter 13 - THE LAST NIGHT CLAIRE WAS ALIVE

Emma had been three years old when Claire died.
I knew memories from that age could be incomplete.
But I also knew my daughter had no reason to invent what she was describing.
I sat beside her in the children's home's family room.
She held her stuffed rabbit against her chest.
"Daddy?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Are you sad?"
I swallowed.
"A little."
She climbed onto my lap.
"Mommy used to say it's okay to be sad."
Tears filled my eyes.
"She was right."
Emma leaned against me.
For a while, we simply sat together.
Then I asked gently:
"Margaret said you remember someone visiting Mommy."
Emma nodded.
"Uncle Charlie."
I tried to keep my voice calm.
"What happened?"
"He was mad."
"At Mommy?"
She nodded.
"He said she had to give him the papers."
My stomach tightened.
"What papers?"
Emma shrugged.
"Mommy put them in my bunny."
I froze.
Her stuffed rabbit.
The same one she'd been carrying since the day we met.
I looked at it.
"Can I see?"
Emma hesitated.
Then handed it to me.
The rabbit was old.
Soft.
One ear had been repaired with blue thread.
Along its back was a small stitched seam.
I looked at Margaret.
She understood immediately.
With Emma's permission, we arranged for the toy to be carefully examined while ensuring she could keep it afterward.
Inside the stuffing was a tiny memory card sealed in plastic.
My hands began shaking.
Claire had hidden evidence inside our daughter's favorite toy.
For eighteen months, it had been sitting inches away from the people who wanted to destroy it.
Rachel contacted investigators.
The card was copied and preserved.
When the files were opened, the truth began unfolding.
There were recordings of Charles and Daniel discussing financial transfers.
Emails concerning the forged adoption documents.
Evidence of payments to the private intermediary who handled Noah's placement.
And a video recorded by Claire two days before her death.
She sat in our old Chicago apartment.
Her hair was pulled back.
Dark circles marked her eyes.
But her voice was steady.
"My name is Claire Bennett. If anything happens to me, I want the police to know I discovered evidence that Daniel Whitmore and Charles Rivers have been stealing from Rivers Capital and using charitable accounts to hide the money."
I covered my mouth.
Claire continued.
"They also arranged the illegal transfer of my son, Noah."
Her voice broke.
"He is alive. I know he is."
She wiped her cheeks.
Then looked directly into the camera.
"Michael, if you ever see this..."
My chest tightened.
"I don't know whether you'll believe me."
Tears streamed down my face.
"But our children deserve the truth."
She paused.
"And despite everything, I hope you become the father they need."
I couldn't breathe.
Then Claire leaned closer.
"There's one more thing."
She held up a document.
A photograph of a bank transfer.
"Charles didn't start stealing from Michael five years ago."
My heart stopped.
"He started before Michael's parents died."
I stared at the screen.
Claire's final words changed everything.
May you like
"Michael, your parents' accident was investigated by the same private contractor who later handled mine."
And in that moment, I realized the nightmare might have begun long before I'd ever met Claire.
