Chapter 9 - Blood on the Marble

Clara grabbed Chloe’s hand and sprinted toward the narrow exit corridor, but Arthur’s silhouette blocked the doorway in the pulsing red emergency light. His face was twisted with desperation. He lunged to grab Clara’s arm, his voice frantic: “Clara! Give me the offshore codes! If Genevieve gets out of here with the keycard, we all die anyway!”
Clara didn't beg. Eighteen months of solitary confinement, starvation, and psychological torment had stripped away every ounce of fragile gentility, leaving behind pure, unyielding steel. She grabbed the heavy brass fire extinguisher mounted to the corridor wall and swung it with all the strength left in her body, smashing the metal canister directly into Arthur’s shoulder. Arthur let out a wet gasp of agony, stumbling backward and crashing hard against the concrete floor, clutching his shattered collarbone.
Meanwhile, in the observation room, Caleb locked his fingers around Genevieve’s wrist, twisting with all his might until she let out a piercing shriek. He broke free, rolling across the floor, his hand sweeping blindly through the shadows until his fingers brushed the cold steel of the dropped pistol. He grabbed the weapon, scrambled to his feet, and leveled the barrel straight at Genevieve as the red strobe light flashed against her pale, furious face.
“Don't move!” Caleb roared, his voice echoing with absolute authority. His hands trembled, but the barrel remained dead center on her chest. “Get on your knees! Now!”
Genevieve froze, her emerald gown torn, her dark hair wild and disheveled. The glamorous socialite had evaporated, leaving behind a snarling, cornered beast. “You don't have the guts, boy,” she hissed, taking a slow, predatory step forward. “You’re just a soft, pampered rich kid. You’ve never held a weapon in your life.”

“Try me,” Caleb said, his finger tightening against the curved trigger. “You stole my mother. You terrorized my sister. Step forward and see what happens.”
Behind her, the low groan of the boiler pipes began to shriek under the electrical short circuit. A pungent smell of sulfur and burning insulation filled the air. Clara appeared in the doorway, her arm wrapped tightly around Chloe. “Caleb! The master electrical fire is spreading to the main gas line! We have three minutes before the pressure valves blow the lower foundation! We have to get out now!”
