Chapter 6 - The Father's Mask

Arthur did not lunge. He did not shout. Instead, his aristocratic face hardened into a mask of terrifying, chilling calm. He slowly unbuttoned his overcoat, stepping between Caleb and the cot where Clara stood trembling with a mixture of profound joy and paralyzing terror. “You always were an inquisitive boy, Caleb,” Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. “Just like your mother. Always poking your nose into ledger books and locked drawers where you have no business.”
“You murdered her life,” Caleb yelled, raising the heavy iron wrench, his eyes blazing with hatred. “You let Chloe cry herself to sleep every night! You made us put flowers on an empty box of dirt while you kept Mom in a cage like an animal! The sheriff is going to see every single letter, every forged document, every single piece of filth you signed!”
Arthur let out a soft, mocking chuckle that sent a shudder down Caleb’s spine. “The sheriff? Sheriff Miller is on my payroll, son. His entire re-election campaign was funded by Montgomery-Vance holdings. Who do you think signed the bogus fire inspection report eighteen months ago? If you walk out of this basement with those papers, you won't make it past the front gates. The world believes your mother is dead. The law believes she is dead. And dead people cannot claim property.”
“Arthur, let him go!” Clara pleaded, stepping forward, her voice cracking with raw agony. “He is your son! Take the money! Take every single cent of the trust! I will sign whatever you want, just let Caleb take Chloe and leave this state!”

“It’s too late for deals, Clara,” a silky, menacing voice echoed from the vault entrance. Genevieve stepped into the doorway, holding a compact black semiautomatic pistol in her gloved right hand. Behind her, trembling violently with wide, tear-filled eyes, was Chloe, Genevieve’s left hand buried deep in the child's dark curls. “The boy broke the nursery seal,” Genevieve sneered, her emerald eyes glittering with cold malice. “He brought the little rat right down to the slaughterhouse.”
Caleb’s blood ran ice-cold as he saw the terror on his little sister’s face. “Chloe!” Caleb gasped, his grip on the wrench tightening until his knuckles cracked. “Let go of her, Genevieve! This is between us!” Genevieve smiled, thumbing the safety switch on the pistol with a sickening metallic click. “Oh, sweet boy. In this family, debts are settled in full.”
