Chapter 13 - The Burning Conservatory

The inferno devoured Oakhaven Manor with terrifying velocity. Century-old timber, dry velvet tapestries, and oil portraits of Arthur’s ancestors were swallowed whole by the roaring tongues of flame. Smoke billowed into the high conservatory ceiling, turning the air into a suffocating, superheated furnace.

Arthur stood in the center of the blaze, laughing maniacally as his empire burned around him, the flare gun smoking in his soot-stained hand. But as a massive timber beam collapsed from the roof, crushing the marble staircase behind him, terror finally pierced through his madness. The fire he had set to destroy his family had cut off his own escape route.

“Genevieve! The keys! Where are the terrace keys?!” Arthur screamed, turning toward his co-conspirator.

Genevieve pulled herself up from the shattered porcelain, her face bloodied, her emerald silk gown charred and smoking. She looked at Arthur with unadulterated venom. “Die in your own fire, Arthur,” she hissed. She scrambled over the low stone balustrade, leaping through a shattered ground-floor window onto the muddy rose gardens outside.

Caleb gripped Clara and Chloe tightly, shielding them with his own body as heavy glass shards rained down from the collapsing dome. “Mom! We have to jump! The terrace drop is only five feet!” Caleb yelled over the deafening roar of the flames.

Together, Clara, Caleb, and Chloe leaped from the burning conservatory terrace, tumbling into the cold, rain-soaked mud of the formal lawn just as the entire glass dome of Oakhaven Manor collapsed inward with an apocalyptic crash of iron and crystal. A massive fireball erupted into the midnight sky, illuminating the rolling Virginia hills in a brilliant, terrifying crimson glow.

Crouched in the wet grass, Clara pulled her children into her arms, weeping tears of pure relief as the cold rain washed the soot and blood from their faces. Caleb looked back at the roaring inferno. Trapped behind the wall of flame in the ruined conservatory, Arthur stood silhouetted against the fire, screaming into the empty night as the grand estate he had stolen crumbled into ashes.
