Chapter 8 - A Sister's Bravery

The tension in the vault snapped like an overtightened piano wire. Arthur took an aggressive step toward Genevieve, his fists clenching with furious betrayal. “You treacherous viper! I gave you everything! I took you out of the gutter, put you in couture, and gave you half of the Montgomery empire!”
“You gave me scraps of a fortune built by your wife's ancestors!” Genevieve barked, raising the barrel of the pistol directly toward Arthur’s forehead. “Back away, Arthur! One twitch and I will paint these white walls with your blue-blood brains and tell the police you went mad and attacked your own children!”
While the two monsters glared at each other in venomous standoff, Chloe’s tiny hand brushed against Caleb’s pocket. In the chaos of the nursery escape, she had carried her small plastic thermos of tea—the heavily sedated syrup that the family physician had ordered for her ‘hallucinations.’ Chloe looked up at Caleb, her eight-year-old eyes blazing with an instinct far beyond her years. With incredible stealth, she uncapped the thermos and tipped the concentrated liquid directly onto the exposed master electrical junction box behind the stainless-steel examination table.
A sudden, violent explosion of blue sparks erupted from the wall unit!
BANG! CRACKLE!
The main circuit breaker blew with a deafening pop, plunging the subterranean bunker into pitch-black darkness! The ventilation system screamed to a violent halt, and the heavy emergency sirens began to wail with a shrill, pulsing red strobe light. Genevieve shrieked in surprise, reflexively firing a blind shot into the dark. The bullet ricocheted wildly off the reinforced steel bulkhead with a deafening metallic screech.

“Caleb! Get them out!” Clara shouted, her voice commanding, motherly strength surging through her weakened muscles.
Caleb didn't hesitate. In the disorienting red flash of the emergency strobe, he lunged forward, tackling Genevieve around the waist. The impact slammed her against the concrete wall, sending the black semiautomatic pistol clattering across the tiled floor into the darkness. Genevieve screamed, her sharp manicured nails raking across Caleb’s cheek, drawing blood as they wrestled on the floor. “You miserable little bastard!” she hissed, driving her knee into Caleb’s bruised ribs. But Caleb held on with white-knuckled desperation, screaming at the top of his lungs: “Run, Mom! Take Chloe and run!”
