Chapter 5 - Behind the Steel Door

The sterile hallway smelled of rubbing alcohol, moldering books, and industrial bleach. Caleb moved on the balls of his feet, keeping his silhouette tight against the white drywall. At the end of the thirty-foot corridor stood a reinforced observation room with a thick pane of one-way acoustic glass looking into a small, windowless cell. Through the tinted glass, Caleb’s gaze fell upon a scene that ripped his soul to pieces.

Clara sat on the edge of a narrow metal cot, wrapped in a faded gray wool cardigan. Her once-radiant golden hair was streaked with stark silver, cut haphazardly at the shoulders, and her porcelain skin was paper-thin from eighteen months without sunlight. Yet, despite her hollow cheeks and frail frame, her posture remained stubbornly upright, her chin held high as Arthur stood over her, tossing a thick legal document onto the stainless-steel table.

“Sign the final release of the family foundation, Clara,” Arthur said, his voice flat, devoid of the charm he projected to high society. “Genevieve’s patience is exhausted, and frankly, so is mine. The offshore transport leaves in two hours. Sign the waiver, and you will live comfortably on an island villa under round-the-clock medical supervision. Refuse, and the transport leaves empty. The ventilation down here can easily suffer an electrical short circuit.”

Clara didn't flinch. She raised her eyes, burning with an indomitable violet fire that Caleb remembered from his earliest childhood. “You were always a coward, Arthur. You couldn't build an empire of your own, so you stole my father's legacy, and now you rely on a hired sociopath to keep me caged. You think signing these papers will save your children? The moment I am gone, Genevieve will dispose of Caleb and Chloe to ensure no blood heir ever contests your fraudulent will.”

“The children are provided for,” Arthur lied smoothly, adjusting his platinum cuff links. “Caleb will be enrolled in a Swiss boarding school by month's end, and Chloe will be placed under Genevieve’s legal guardianship. They believe you are ashes, Clara. They have moved on.”

“That is a lie!” Caleb couldn't contain the fury surging through his veins. He burst through the observation door, the iron spud wrench gripped tightly in his white-knuckled fist. Clara gasped, rising to her feet as her hands flew to her mouth, tears instantly spilling down her gaunt cheeks. “Caleb! No! Get out of here!” Arthur spun around, his refined mask slipping for a fraction of a second, replaced by a look of pure, murderous rage.
