Chapter 8 - THE PRICE OF MY SISTER'S SILENCE

Madison returned the next day with more than an apology.

She brought a flash drive containing emails, photographs, and scanned documents she had copied from our mother’s computer. She said she had finally searched for the letter from our grandmother after learning that I owned the company shares.

One email stopped Rachel cold.

It was from my father to our mother, written eight months earlier.

Once the transfer clears, Emily takes the liabilities. We keep the assets. She will never know until it’s too late.

I read the sentence repeatedly.

My family had planned to leave me with millions in debt while preserving their own wealth.

The next email discussed Madison’s engagement ring. The $48,000 purchase wasn’t merely extravagant. My parents intended to use it as a public distraction while several transfers were completed.

Madison covered her mouth.

“I thought they were just taking advantage of you,” she whispered. “I didn’t know they were going to destroy your life.”

“Why should I believe you now?”

She reached for the flash drive, then stopped herself.

“You shouldn’t have to. I’ll testify.”

It was the first useful thing she had offered me without expecting something in return.

Rachel immediately preserved copies of the emails and instructed Madison not to access the computer again. We would provide the evidence through proper legal channels.

Before leaving, Madison remembered one more detail.

“Dad keeps the original documents in his office safe,” she said. “He told Mom the new buyer needs them signed before Friday.”

“Which documents?”

My sister’s face drained of color.

“The ones that make the entire company look as if you stole it.”
