Chapter 5 - THE FAMILY THAT TURNED AGAINST ME

The name beneath the black strip was my mother’s.

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak. Margaret Bennett had stood beside the staircase holding her expensive handbag while my father threw my suitcase down the stairs. I had believed she was simply choosing his side.

Now I understood that she might have been involved long before that night.

Within hours, my parents launched a public attack.

My mother posted that I had abandoned my family during a financial crisis. Madison shared the post with a caption calling me jealous, selfish, and desperate for attention. Relatives who had accepted my gifts for years suddenly messaged me about loyalty.

My father’s statement was even worse. He claimed I had improperly accessed company accounts and threatened to destroy the business unless they obeyed me.

Rachel advised me not to respond emotionally.

“People who have no evidence often try to win the audience first,” she said.

Instead, we sent formal notices to the lenders, requesting preservation of the original applications and electronic records. We also notified the relevant financial institutions that the signatures were disputed.

That afternoon, my aunt Patricia called.

“Emily, there’s something your grandmother told me before she died,” she whispered. “Your father promised her he would protect your inheritance.”

“What inheritance?”

Silence followed.

Then my aunt revealed that my grandmother had left a sealed letter with her attorney, specifically instructing that it be delivered to me if my father ever attempted to use my identity for financial gain.

“The letter was collected six months ago,” Patricia said. “Your father signed for it.”

My father hadn’t merely hidden a financial crime.

He had intercepted a warning about it.
