Chapter 2 - THE CARD THAT STOPPED WORKING

Fourteen days after I left home, my phone began vibrating before breakfast.

First came Madison’s texts. Then my mother’s calls. Finally, my father left a voicemail so furious that I played it twice.

“You have exactly ten minutes to fix what you’ve done,” he barked. “Your mother’s card was declined at the boutique, and Madison’s reservation is ruined. Call the bank!”

I nearly laughed.

For seven years, those cards had never declined. My family had bought designer handbags, jewelry, vacations, and furniture without asking what any of it cost. Apparently, they had mistaken my silence for an unlimited line of credit.

I replied with one sentence: “Those accounts were canceled because you no longer have authorization to use them.”

Madison immediately called.

“You can’t embarrass us like this!”

“You embarrassed yourselves when you threw me out and demanded that I keep paying.”

She hung up.

By noon, my mother had left three messages threatening legal action. By evening, Rachel had received a letter from my father’s attorney accusing me of unlawfully withholding family funds.

It was ridiculous. I had no obligation to keep funding their purchases.

But Rachel wasn’t laughing.

“They’re trying to establish that you controlled the family finances and deliberately cut them off,” she explained. “It could be an attempt to discredit you before the lenders investigate.”

Then my banking app flashed a new alert.

Someone had attempted to open another account in my name.

The application had been submitted that morning.

The contact email belonged to Madison.
