Chapter 6 - MY SISTER KNOCKED AFTER MIDNIGHT

Madison arrived at my apartment just after midnight, dressed in expensive clothes and looking nothing like the confident woman who had watched me leave our family home.

I almost closed the door.

“Please,” she whispered. “I need to tell you something before Dad finds out I came here.”

She sat on my couch, twisting a diamond bracelet around her wrist. I recognized it immediately. It had appeared on a statement as a $19,000 purchase two months earlier.

“Did you know about Northstar?” I asked.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No. Not at first.”

She admitted that our mother had once asked her to scan my passport, tax returns, and old signature pages. Madison had been told the documents were needed to prepare paperwork for a family investment.

She had handed them over without questioning anything.

“And the jewelry?” I asked.

She looked down.

“Mom said Dad had approved it. I knew the money came from your card, but I thought you’d agreed.”

“You never asked me.”

“I know.”

For once, she didn’t offer an excuse.

Then Madison reached into her purse and pulled out a folded envelope. Inside was a photograph of my grandmother, Helen, standing beside my father in front of a bank vault.

On the back, my grandmother had written six words: He must never control Emily’s money.

Madison explained that our grandmother had discovered something suspicious shortly before her death.

“She made Dad promise he would tell you,” Madison said.

“What was he supposed to tell me?”

My sister swallowed hard.

“Grandma didn’t leave you money.”

May you like

She looked at me in terror.

“She left you ownership of Bennett Construction.”
