Chapter 12 - THE MAN WAITING OUTSIDE MY OFFICE

My father stood outside my office when I arrived the next morning, his expression carefully arranged into disappointment.

“You’ve turned this into a war,” he said.

“No. You started one when you used my identity.”

He lowered his voice. “You don’t understand what will happen if this becomes public. Employees will lose jobs. People who trusted me will suffer.”

For years, those words would have stopped me. I would have paid whatever he demanded to protect the people he invoked.

Not anymore.

“If you cared about those employees, you wouldn’t have diverted their payroll money.”

His face changed.

“You ungrateful little—”

Rachel stepped beside me. “Any further discussion should take place through counsel.”

My father turned toward her, then looked back at me.

“Your mother has no idea what she’s done.”

“She told the truth.”

“She told you what she thinks you want to hear.”

He walked away before I could answer.

An hour later, investigators confirmed that they had received the original ledger and additional company records. The evidence was being reviewed alongside the disputed applications, bank transfers, and ownership filings.

Then my father made one last desperate move.

He announced an emergency meeting with company creditors and circulated a statement claiming I had secretly controlled Northstar from the beginning.

Attached was the draft confession he had tried to make me sign.

Only this version contained an extra paragraph.

It claimed I had personally ordered the diversion of payroll money.

He had forged another page.

But he had overlooked something that would expose him.

The electronic file contained the name of the person who created it.

And it wasn't mine.
