Chapter 9 - The Betrayal Behind the Boardroom Doors

Ethan listened to Evelyn's recording three times.

Each time, the same question cut deeper: Why had she believed he needed protection from the truth?

The next files answered part of it. Graham had been responsible for the falsified inspections, but he had not acted alone. He had convinced several executives that admitting the failures would bankrupt the company. When Evelyn refused to cooperate, he forced her out and threatened legal action if she spoke publicly.

Daniel Collins had become the easiest person to blame.

One file contained an unsigned letter Evelyn had written to Ethan but never sent. She described the pressure from the board and warned that Graham was manipulating him. She had planned to deliver the evidence after Ethan secured the company's next round of funding.

But she never did.

Ethan sat motionless. “I thought she abandoned us.”

Maya studied him. “Maybe she thought telling you would destroy everything you'd worked for.”

“Or maybe she thought I was too weak to stand against him.”

“You were young.”

“I was responsible.”

For once, Maya didn't argue. She understood what it meant to carry guilt for a decision made years earlier, especially when someone else had controlled the information.

Ethan immediately turned the evidence over to the independent investigator and the company's outside counsel. He also requested an emergency board meeting and instructed his staff not to contact Maya without her consent.

But Graham moved faster.

By noon, a news alert accused Ethan of concealing a workplace safety scandal and using a personal relationship to intimidate a whistleblower's family. The article included photographs of Ethan and Maya outside her apartment.

Maya's name appeared in the headline.

Reporters gathered outside her building. Her employer placed her on temporary leave, citing the public controversy. Parents at Lily's school began whispering when Maya arrived to pick her up.

Ethan offered to make a public statement, but Maya stopped him.

“If you say I'm innocent because you care about me, they'll say I'm being protected by a billionaire.”

“Then tell me what you need.”

“I need the truth to stand without my face attached to it.”

He agreed.

That evening, the board convened behind closed doors. Graham presented a motion to suspend Ethan for misconduct and concealment of evidence.

The vote was almost unanimous.

Then Daniel Price entered carrying a sealed envelope from the company's oldest archive.

It contained the original board minutes from the night Evelyn disappeared.

And the signature approving her forced resignation belonged to Ethan Mercer.
