Chapter 13 - The Last Person He Suspected

The transfer record led to Victor Hale, the investor who had helped Ethan secure Mercer Dynamics' first major contract. Victor had attended Ethan's wedding, visited his family home, and once lent him money when the company was close to bankruptcy.

Ethan refused to believe the evidence at first.

Then the investigators found matching payments to the contractor who had disabled the cooling alarms. The money had moved through several shell companies, but the trail ended at an investment fund controlled by Victor.

When confronted, Victor claimed the payments had been made to protect the company's value. He insisted that he had never ordered anyone to endanger employees or silence Evelyn.

But he admitted that he had paid Graham to prevent the safety scandal from becoming public.

“People would have lost their jobs,” Victor said. “The company might have collapsed. I was trying to protect what we built.”

“You were protecting your investment,” Ethan replied. “And you used my company as the price.”

The friendship ended in a single conversation.

Ethan cooperated with the investigation and agreed to step down temporarily while the board reviewed its governance. He did not demand that his name be removed from the scandal. He had learned that leadership meant more than controlling the final headline.

Maya watched the developments from a distance. She had returned to work, though her employer still treated her cautiously. Her certification review had been reopened, and she was determined to pass on her own merits.

One afternoon, Ethan appeared at the small community library where Maya was studying. He didn't bring a gift or ask her to dinner.

He placed a folded sheet of paper on the table.

It was Lily's drawing from New Year's Eve: three stick figures sitting beneath a crooked heart. Ethan had kept it in his wallet, and the paper was worn at the edges.

“I thought she might want it back,” he said.

Maya touched the drawing.

“You kept this all this time?”

“It was the first thing in years that made me feel like I might belong somewhere.”

She looked at him carefully. “And what do you want now?”

“To keep showing up. If you'll let me. Even if we're only friends for a while.”

Maya was quiet for a long moment.

Then she said, “Coffee on Saturday. Same place. No secrets.”

“I can do that.”

He left without asking for more.

As Maya watched him walk away, her phone buzzed with a message from the state certification board.
