Chapter 1 - The Promise at the Coffee Shop

At 9:57 on Saturday morning, Ethan Mercer stood outside a small coffee shop in Chicago, holding a paper bag containing two blueberry muffins and wondering whether he had just made the biggest mistake of his life.

He had faced hostile investors, federal investigators, and business rivals who would have happily watched him lose everything. None of them had made his hands sweat.

But Maya Collins had.

She had invited him to coffee with one simple instruction: No grand gestures. No need to impress anybody. Just show up.

So he had left his driver at home, ignored his assistant’s twelve calls, and arrived wearing a plain navy sweater instead of the tailored suit that usually announced his six-billion-dollar fortune before he said a word.

Through the window, he spotted Maya sitting beside her seven-year-old daughter, Lily. Maya wore a cream-colored sweater, her dark hair tied back, and an expression of exhaustion she tried to hide whenever Lily looked at her.

When she saw him, she smiled.

“You actually came.”

“I said I would.”

“People say a lot of things.” She studied him for a moment. “I’m glad you’re different.”

Those words landed harder than any compliment he had ever received.

For the next forty minutes, they talked about ordinary things. Lily explained why her stuffed rabbit, Mr. Buttons, deserved his own seat at the table. Maya confessed that she was studying for a security management certification while working overnight shifts. Ethan told them he worked with software, carefully leaving out the name of his company.

Then Lily asked a question that stopped him cold.

“Ethan, do you have a family?”

He glanced at the empty chair beside him.

“Not the kind I wish I had.”

Maya's expression softened, but she didn't pity him. Somehow, that made the loneliness hurt more.

When they stepped outside, Maya's phone vibrated. She glanced at the screen, and the color drained from her face.

“What is it?” Ethan asked.

“Nothing.” She locked the phone too quickly. “Just someone who doesn't know when to leave me alone.”

But Ethan caught a glimpse of the message before the screen went dark.

ASK ETHAN MERCER WHAT HAPPENED TO THE WOMAN WHO BUILT HIS COMPANY.

He froze.

Nobody outside his inner circle knew that name and that story belonged in the same sentence.

And whoever had sent that message knew exactly where to find Maya.
