Chapter 12 - The Night the Truth Went Public

The emergency board meeting was scheduled for Friday evening, with a press conference immediately afterward. Graham intended to announce that Ethan had been removed permanently and that the company had resolved the historical allegations.
He had no idea the independent investigation was about to deliver its findings.
Ethan could have fought the board in court and waited months for a verdict. Instead, he requested permission to speak at the meeting—not as chief executive, but as a shareholder willing to accept responsibility for the company's failures.
Maya watched the livestream from her aunt's living room. Lily sat beside her, coloring a picture of three people holding hands.
When Ethan stepped to the microphone, he looked tired. There was no expensive watch, no polished smile, and no rehearsed promise that everything would be fine.
“My company failed employees who trusted it,” he began. “A report was falsified. A security worker was blamed for an incident he tried to prevent. A brilliant engineer was pushed out after raising concerns. I did not know the full truth at the time, but I signed documents without demanding answers. That failure belongs to me.”
The room went silent.
He announced that the company would cooperate with investigators, correct the historical record, and establish an independent safety and ethics office with authority to report directly to shareholders. He refused to promise outcomes before the investigation was complete.
Then he stepped aside.
The investigator presented the authenticated records. The intercepted email. The original report. The altered minutes. The recordings.
Graham's composure finally cracked.
“This is a personal vendetta,” he snapped. “A disgruntled former employee's daughter and a founder desperate to save his reputation.”
Maya felt her hands tighten around her phone.
Ethan didn't defend her. He didn't need to. The evidence spoke for itself.
A board member asked Graham whether he had instructed the legal department to divert Evelyn's email.
Graham refused to answer.
Then an investigator approached him and presented a formal notice requiring him to surrender his company devices.
The livestream captured his face as he realized he could no longer control the story.
Within minutes, reporters began publishing the documents. Maya's father's name was cleared publicly. Evelyn Shaw was recognized as a whistleblower rather than a disgraced former employee.
But just as the meeting ended, Ethan received a private message from an unknown number.
YOU HAVE THE WRONG MAN. GRAHAM FOLLOWED ORDERS, TOO. ASK WHO PAID HIM TO SILENCE EVELYN.
Attached was a bank transfer record.

The money had come from a company owned by one of Mercer Dynamics' largest investors.
And that investor was Ethan's oldest friend.
