Chapter 7 - The Secret Between Two Mothers

Maya stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

Her mother had died when Maya was nineteen, leaving behind a handful of family pictures and a lifetime of unanswered questions. In the photograph, she looked younger, confident, and unmistakably close to Evelyn Shaw. They stood in front of the original Mercer Dynamics building, each holding a paper cup of coffee.

On the back, someone had written: The night we decided we wouldn't be silent.

Maya brought the photograph to Ethan the next morning.

He recognized Evelyn immediately. “She was my co-founder. But I never knew she was close to your mother.”

“My mother never mentioned her. Not once.”

“Maybe she was protecting you.”

“From what?”

Neither of them knew.

They searched the public archives and found that Evelyn had left Mercer Dynamics shortly after the data-center incident. Her departure had been described as voluntary, but no resignation letter existed in the official records. The company's internal timeline simply jumped from one month to the next.

Ethan felt sick. He had built an empire on the belief that he knew his company's history. Now every missing document suggested he had inherited a story someone else had written.

Maya called her aunt, who had kept some of her mother's belongings after her death. The older woman was silent when Maya described the photograph.

“I wondered when you'd find that,” her aunt finally said.

“You knew?”

“Your mother and Evelyn were friends. They believed the company was hiding unsafe practices. Your mother helped Evelyn copy records before she left.”

“Where are those records?”

“I don't know. Your mother hid them somewhere. She told me that if anyone came asking, I should say nothing until you were old enough to understand.”

Maya's throat tightened. “I'm thirty-one.”

“I know, sweetheart. But some secrets don't become safer just because we grow older.”

After the call, Maya and Ethan sat in silence. Their connection had begun as an ordinary coffee invitation, but it was now tangled in a history neither of them had chosen.

Then Maya remembered something.

When her mother was alive, she kept a small brass key inside a jewelry box. Maya had inherited the box but never understood what the key opened.

She hurried home and found it beneath a stack of old photographs.

The key was stamped with three letters:

M-D-X.
