Chapter 5 - HE SAID HE WAS BORROWING FROM OUR DAUGHTER

Marcus cried.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Tears simply filled his eyes.

“I was going to put it back.”

Lucia stared.

“When?”

“The development closes next month.”

“The one where Valeria lives?”

His expression changed.

So he knew she knew that too.

“It was an investment.”

“You took Daniela’s education money.”

“Borrowed.”

“No loan agreement.”

“I had access.”

“Access is not ownership.”

He looked away.

Then:

“I needed liquidity.”

Lucia had heard enough financial excuses in operating rooms and boardrooms to recognize one wearing a suit.

“For what?”

Marcus said the West Loop project was supposed to become a boutique medical-office building.

He believed doctors from Lucia’s hospital would lease space.

He expected a major profit.

Then rates increased.

Renovation costs exploded.

Tenants withdrew.

The deal started failing.

So he moved Daniela’s money temporarily.

Then borrowed more.

“How much total debt?”

He hesitated.

“Two point three.”

Lucia’s pulse changed.

“Million?”

“Yes.”

“Teresa knows?”

“Some.”

“Valeria?”

“No.”

Then Lucia asked:

“Why did your mother receive eighty-eight thousand dollars under Valeria’s name?”

Marcus looked confused.

“What?”

For once, genuine confusion.

He had approved $8,000 monthly payments to TS Family Management for “property operations.”

He did not know Teresa’s company had invoiced them under Valeria’s consulting label.

His mother had altered the description.

Why?

Because Teresa did not want Marcus’s business partners questioning repeated payments to his mother.

Lucia almost laughed.

Everyone in this family had a secret version of the same money.

Then Marcus whispered:

“Lucia, I love you.”

Her face did not change.

“And Valeria?”

He closed his eyes.

“I don’t know.”

“That isn’t fair to either of us.”

“I was going to end it.”

“When?”

Silence.

Then Lucia noticed a bag beside the hospital chair.

Marcus’s clothes from the crash.

His wallet.

Keys.

A jewelry box.

Small.

Black.

She stared.

“What’s that?”

Marcus looked toward it.

Panic.

Lucia did not touch it.

A nurse opened the bag under standard inventory procedure.

Inside the box:

A diamond ring.

Not Lucia’s style.

May you like

Not Lucia’s size.

Marcus had been carrying an engagement ring when he crashed beside his pregnant mistress.
