Chapter 2 - DANIELA’S COLLEGE FUND WAS MISSING $180,000

Lucia had started looking into Marcus three weeks earlier because of one message.
VALERIA CRUZ.
The name appeared on his phone at 11:48 p.m.
Marcus grabbed the device too quickly.
Lucia noticed.
She said nothing.
The next morning, she checked only accounts she was legally entitled to review.
She expected hotel charges.
Flowers.
Maybe dinners.
Instead she found a transfer from an investment account created for Daniela.
$60,000.
Then another.
$75,000.
Then $45,000.
Total:
$180,000.
The trust account had been funded mostly by Lucia’s late father and designed for Daniela’s future education.
Marcus had limited administrative authority because Lucia believed co-parenting meant trust.
He used that authority to move money into:
SALGADO DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS.
A company Lucia had never heard of.
She called her attorney immediately.
Three weeks later, the emergency filing revoked Marcus’s managerial access wherever Lucia had unilateral legal authority to do so and asked the court to review the questionable transfers.
Nothing was secretly “seized.”
Nothing magically disappeared.
Lucia simply stopped pretending that marriage made oversight unnecessary.
Now, at 4:18 a.m., Teresa cornered her outside the ICU.
“How is Marcus?”
“Stable.”
Teresa exhaled.
“Thank God.”
Then:
“And that girl?”
“Alive.”
Teresa’s expression hardened.
“Good.”
The answer was too quick.
Lucia looked at her.
“You know who Valeria is.”
Teresa froze.
“No.”
Lucia waited.
Seven years of dealing with Teresa had taught her that silence made the woman nervous.
Finally Teresa snapped:
“Marcus told me there was someone.”
Lucia’s stomach turned.
“How long?”
“Lucia—”
“How long?”
“Four months.”
The affair had lasted six.
Teresa was minimizing.
Then Lucia asked:
“Did you know she was pregnant?”
Teresa looked away.
There.
“Yes.”
Lucia almost laughed.
Her mother-in-law had begged her to save Marcus while knowing the woman dying twenty feet away carried his child.
Then Teresa whispered:
“Marcus said the baby might not be his.”
Lucia said nothing.
Teresa continued:
“He said Valeria was confused.”
Lucia’s eyes narrowed.
“Confused about paternity?”
“About everything.”
Then Teresa made the mistake that changed the entire direction of the night.
“She was never supposed to keep the baby.”
Lucia stopped breathing.
“What did you say?”
Teresa’s face drained.
“I didn’t mean—”
“You said she wasn’t supposed to keep the baby.”
Silence.
Then:
“What exactly did Marcus promise Valeria?”
Teresa looked toward the ICU doors.
May you like
“He promised her money.”
And suddenly the missing $180,000 from Daniela’s trust had a possible destination.
