Chapter 11 - TERESA HAD TRIED TO ERASE VALERIA FROM THE FAMILY

Teresa’s proposed agreement was brutal.

Not illegal on its face.

But revealing.

$300,000 settlement.

Confidentiality.

No public discussion of the affair.

No claim against Salgado Development Partners.

No involvement in the West Loop property.

And one clause regarding the unborn child:

All parental rights and obligations to be resolved separately after birth.

Valeria had interpreted that as a warning.

Teresa insisted it was standard language.

Nothing about their family was standard anymore.

Lucia asked Teresa:

“Why were you paying Valeria?”

“To protect Marcus.”

“From what?”

“Scandal.”

“His child is not a scandal.”

Teresa started crying.

“I knew what people would say.”

“You mean what you would say.”

Silence.

Then Teresa admitted something uglier.

She had always wanted Marcus and Lucia to have another child.

A son.

Lucia refused.

Not because she hated children.

Because pregnancy had been medically dangerous with Daniela and she did not want another.

Teresa resented that for years.

Then Marcus got Valeria pregnant.

Instead of seeing an innocent child, Teresa saw two things at once:

The grandson she had wanted.

And the public shame she hated.

So she tried to control everything.

Valeria.

Money.

Property.

Silence.

Lucia stared.

“You wanted the baby hidden but protected financially.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted Marcus married to me.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted Valeria paid off.”

“Yes.”

“And you thought nobody else needed a choice.”

Teresa broke down.

For once, Lucia did not rescue her.

Then the West Loop building received a serious offer.

Sale price would cover most debt.

Daniel would recover approximately 70% of his investment.

Carol—no, Teresa—would have to return some fees depending on the accounting.

Marcus would lose nearly all personal equity.

He accepted.

“I deserve that.”

Lucia corrected him.

“This isn’t about deserving pain.”

He looked up.

“It’s about ending the risk.”

Important difference.

Then the hospital completed its internal review regarding the fake lease.

Lucia was fully cleared.

Her signature had been copied without authorization.

Teresa’s actions were referred to appropriate authorities and civil counsel.

Lucia’s professional reputation survived.

But one question remained.

Why had Marcus been so sure Lucia would eventually save the building?

The answer appeared in an email.

Marcus to Teresa:

LUCIA ALWAYS FIXES THINGS WHEN DANIELA COULD BE HURT.

Teresa:

THEN MAKE SURE SHE KNOWS DANIELA IS TIED TO IT.

Lucia stared.

They had deliberately linked the building to Daniela because they believed motherhood would force Lucia to rescue their bad investment.
